2020 Washington Football Team Predictions and Season Win Total Picks
The sinking interest and waning support of the Washington fan base has been an open secret/public joke for years. So, with that in mind, I have to ask: if the 2020 NFL season is played without fans in the stadiums, will anyone really notice a difference in Washington?
Washington supporters have been thoroughly disillusioned by two decades of craven, ineffectual leadership from bloodsucking owner Daniel Snyder and appointed stooge Bruce Allen. So I can understand the lukewarm reaction to their hiring of Carolina castoff Ron Rivera. Considering that Rivera is the 11th Washington head coach since the turn of the century, a skeptical approach is probably the safest.
But I am going to go out on a limb and say that – brace yourself – the Washington Football Team might actually be pretty good this year.
I don’t care about this franchise at all, so their yearly degradation is nothing more than entertainment for me. I have no agenda is trying to sell you on this horror of an organization. I honestly believe that this team has real sleeper potential and that it will be a moneymaker at the window for bettors this season.
Arizona’s fleecing of Houston to get DeAndre Hopkins was the best move any NFL team made this offseason. I think nabbing Rivera was the second-best move. Riverboat Ron is no future Hall of Fame head coach. However, he has a 76-63 record in his career, three double-digit win seasons, four playoff appearances and one NFC title. He represents a baseline of competence that the former Redskins simply haven’t seen for the majority of the last 30 years.
Rivera and handpicked defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio step into a great situation in Washington. These guys are proven defensive masterminds. And they inherit a roster bursting with young talent. Washington has spent a first round pick on defense each of the last four years, including this April’s selection of beastly Chase Young. Hard-hitting safeties Landon Collins and Sean Davis anchor an improving secondary, and I see enough pieces for Rivera to turn this into a Top 12 defense.
Offensively, the former Redskins have a solid offensive line. The receiving corps is extremely shallow. And outside of Terry McLaurin there are no playmakers (and barely any NFL-caliber players) on the outside.
The biggest issue for this team is at quarterback. Dwayne Haskins stinks. He is never going to be an NFL-caliber quarterback, and the sooner the former Redskins embrace that fact about their 2019 first round pick the better off they will be. If Haskins starts the season under center, then forget everything I said about this team improving.
There is an outside chance that Kyle Allen, who followed Rivera from Carolina to Washington, could win the starting job in camp. If he does, then the ceiling for this Former Redskins team rises considerably, and I can see the former Redskins threatening .500.
Injuries have also been a massive issue for the former Redskins. They have been among the league leaders in adjusted games lost over the last three years, finishing No. 1 in 2017 and No. 2 in 2019. This team needs to find a way to keep its players on the field. And if they do, I think that this team can surprise some people.
The former Redskins will need to build some momentum early in the season because their late season schedule is a bear. Washington does have the benefit of playing in the putrid NFC East. They also get winnable games against fellow bottom feeders Arizona, Cleveland, Detroit and Cincinnati this year. And a Week 16 game against rebuilding Carolina – Rivera’s former team – could be the win that puts Washington over its season win total.
