Raquel Pennington vs Marion Reneau
UFC on ESPN 11
UFC Apex in Las Vegas, NV
Saturday, June 20, 2020
Raquel Pennington is set to face off with Marion Reneau on Saturday, June 20th at the APEX facility in Las Vegas for UFC Fight Night. This women’s bantamweight bout will have the #6 ranked Pennington looking to rise in the rankings when she squares up with the #10 ranked Marion Reneau. Pennington is currently a slight favorite coming with current odds sitting at -140 for her. That said, this fight could go either way.
Raquel Pennington hails from Colorado Springs, CO and trains at Colorado Springs BJJ. Pennington comes into this fight with a record of 10-9-0. She stands 5’7” tall and has a reach of 67.5 inches. Pennington debuted in the UFC in August of 2013 when she was a member of Team Tate. She ended up losing her final semi-final fight to Jessica Rakoczy by unanimous decision. Her performance on the show was enough to get her into the UFC.
Pennington is coming off a decision loss to Holly Holm at UFC 246. This was not an overly exciting fight with much of the match being played out against the cage. However, Holm landed more total strikes and controlled the pace of the fight to come away with the win. It was Pennington’s third loss in her last four fights, and she will be looking to bounce back against a game opponent in Marion ‘The Belizean Bruiser’ Reneau. However, Pennington is 11 years younger than Reneau and that should be an advantage going into this fight.
Marion Reneau is a Tulare, CA native trains out of Elite Team in Visalia, CA. Reneau originally tried out for The Ultimate Fighter 18 but was allegedly told she was too old. She went on to win a couple more fights and the UFC decided to sign her. She had her Octagon debut back on January 3, 2015 when she faced Alexis Dufresne. Reneau won the fight by unanimous decision and was praised by Dana White for her performance.
Ready to get back in the win column herself, Marion “The Belizean Bruiser” Reneau comes into the fight on a two-fight losing streak. This fight will be important if Reneau wants to get back in contention for a title. In her most recent fight, Reneau lost a decision to Yana Kunitskaya. Reneau was out struck by a total of 226 to 128. They both landed two takedowns, but Kunitskaya ended up being too much in the end and took home the victory. It was an unfortunate ending to the fight as Reneau really hurt Kunitskaya, but the striking volume was too much in the judges’ eyes.
This fight is not going to reveal the next title contender, but it is particularly important for both fighters who are looking to get back in the win column. That said, a couple more losses by either of these fighters and they might be seeing their way out of the UFC.
In order for Pennington to come away with the win, she is going to need to be all over Reneau from the beginning and make it ugly. Reneau’s strength is her Jiu Jitsu and some finishing power, but her wrestling is lacking. Pennington is a solid wrestler which means Reneau might find it difficult to get Pennington in a position where she can use her Jiu Jitsu. Pennington is a decent striker and tends to stay busy, but she is not going to knock anyone out. All that said, if this fight does not go into a place where Reneau can work her grappling or she lands a big shot, we see this fight going the way of Pennington. That is not to say that Reneau cannot pull this out, but we do not see it going her way.
In other fights to watch, we are looking forward to watching Curtis Blaydes face Alexander Volkov in the main even of the night. Curtis “Razor” Blaydes is well known for his cutting elbows and ground & pound. He currently sits as the #3 contender in the Heavyweight division. Alexander “Drago” Volkov hails from Russia and ranks #7 in the division. They both have a similar reach even though Volkov is 3 inches taller. We expect this to be a fun fight.
