Wyoming Cowboys Football Picks Week 14 vs. Air Force: Specialization Series
It seems like just yesterday we were prepping for the start of the college football season when in reality the regular season is coming to a screeching halt and all that's left to do is play out the conference title games and then take part in Bowl mania.
From a Wyoming perspective, this season has been nothing short of inconsistent. Sure, they may sit 7-4 heading into this week's matchup against Air Force , but in those four losses they looked lost at times and mustered little to no offense. If they can find a way to get to eight wins this week, it'll likely be on the strength of their defense, which has been the team's MVP this season. From what I gather, the Cowboys are projected to contest the Cheeze-it Bowl on December 27 against an opponent that's still to be determined. We'll know more as this week wraps up, and I'm looking forward to previewing that game to tie a bow on what's been a great Wyoming specialization series.
Each week this article will give you a small recap on how the team fared in their last game. You'd be surprised at how many times a team's win/loss outcome was either justified or lucky to happen. The box score may say one thing, but actually watching the game and seeing what's happening is a vital tool in handicapping. At the end of the article, I'll give you a selection on the upcoming game. I'll be using the Doc's Sports Unit Betting System for every pick, which will allow readers to follow along and track the results.
Last Game
It wasn't exactly the prettiest win in the history of football, but Wyoming got itself a much-needed win to end the losing streak at two games and harness some momentum going into the final matchup of the regular season. Wyoming was able to win the time of possession battle thanks in large part to a tremendous performance by running back Xazavian Valladay, who ran the ball 27 times for 154 yards. Colorado State simply had no answer for the ground game, and Wyoming was able to find pay dirt on the ground for both of their touchdowns. Defensively, the Cowboys came to play in a big way, limiting the Rams to just seven points and 265 yards of total offense. They held the Rams to just 15 first downs and 5-of-12 on third down. From a passing perspective, the Cowboys completed just eight of 15 pass attempts, but there wasn't exactly a need to throw the ball as they were in control of the game from the third quarter onward. Colorado State never looked threatening outside of their one touchdown drive in the second quarter. And moving forward to this week, the Cowboys defense will need to be on their toes and flying to the ball against the Air Force rushing attack.
Week 14 at Air Force
As of writing, 5Dimes is the only site with a posted lined on this game. The current line is Wyoming +10.5 (-110) and the posted total is set at 43 (-110). Coming into this game Wyoming was in desperate need of a "get right" game, and they got that against Colorado State. While it wasn't pretty, the running game got going and the defense stepped up in a big way. Both of those units will have to crank their play up another notch as playing Air Force and the triple-option rushing attack is extremely difficult. Air Force is 9-2 on the season and has won six-straight games, most recently a 44-22 win against New Mexico, where they ran the ball for 213 yards. What's more shocking is that they threw for 327 yards, which came in just 10 passing attempts. That likely won't happen again this week, but the rushing attack can still beat opponents on its own. The Falcons are looking to get to 10 wins and secure a legitimate bowl game for themselves come next month. It'll be interesting to see which team can win the time of possession battle and keep the other team's offense off the field. With both teams running the ball extremely well, it would be wise to look at the under as the clock will continue to bleed and the possession should be limited for both sides.
Series History: This series dates back to 1957, and it's been essentially dead even in terms of wins. Air Force leads the series 28-26, with three wins coming in 1957, 1964, and 1977. However, it's been the Cowboys who have owned the series of late, winning three straight games, including last year's contest by a score of 35-27 in Laramie.
Wyoming at Air Force Football Picks
We are going to keep this short and sweet because we value your time and we know it's been a gruelling season to date playing on or against the Cowboys. They've been one of the most inconsistent teams we've followed in this specialization series, and the results have shown so. We do come of a great 3-Unit win last week as we laid the points with Wyoming over Colorado State. This week, we are taking the under in this game as both teams will have limited possession and with both team's willingness to run the football the clock should keep bleeding and the time will evaporate before you know it.
Selection: 3-Unit Play. #383/384 (5Dimes). Take Under 43 (-110) Wyoming vs Air Force (Saturday at 2:00 pm)
