Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
Doc's Sports Service is well established as a recognized leader and trusted name in the sports handicapping industry going all the way back to our humble beginnings in 1971. Our incredible success over such a lengthy span of time can be directly attributed to our ongoing working relationship with the best expert handicappers in the nation. Raphael Esparza has been a valued member of that team for quite some time going back to his long and successful run in the Las Vegas sportsbook industry. That career culminated in 2013 with him holding the prestigious title of Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Resorts' Aria.
While he may have retired from the sportsbook industry six years ago, Esparza has remained as busy as ever running a successful sports investment business from his home base in Las Vegas as well as from the Big Easy in New Orleans. Whether you are looking for big unit plays for all the major sports or top prop picks for the next big movie premier, his selection packages offer a wide array of betting options on a weekly basis. Doc's has had the fortunate opportunity to gain his insight into some the hottest trending betting topics each week in the world of sports.
Doc's: This year's Stanley Cup Finals will come to a dramatic close one way or the other this Wednesday night with a deciding Game 7 between St. Louis and Boston. We would probably agree on a strong lean towards the Bruins winning the Stanley Cup, so would a parlay with the "over" set at five goals with a few books be a value play?
RE: That all depends on which version of the Bruins do show up in Game 7. With the total set at five along with Boston listed as such a heavy home favorite, I probably would go with the Bruins and the over five goals in this matchup.
RE: Golden State's futures odds and series price odds are heavily influenced by the amount of money the public bets on this team. Using a simpler betting viewpoint, Toronto still only needs to win one of the next two games, so the value still lies with the Raptors regardless of any adjusted series price odds.
Doc's: Brooks Koepka is easily the hottest golfer when it comes to winning Majors with a pair of victories in the last two US Opens and the last two PGA Championships. What kind of odds would you give him to pull of the threepeat with a victory in this week's 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach?
RE: His lack of name recognition still has Koepka flying under the radar with many golf bettors. This works to add some major value to his betting odds in whatever tournament he plays. The issue with winning another US Open this week lies more so in the heavy competition he will face. That is not to say that a small wager Koepka would be a bad move.
Doc's: The 2019 CFL regular season gets underway this week. The Week 1 schedule is highlighted by a rematch of last season's Grey Cup title game between Ottawa and Calgary. Do you have any early insight on how to bet this season opener?
RE: Each of these teams have quite a few new faces on either side of the ball since they last played one another in the 2018 Grey Cup. In light of so many unknowns heading into Week 1, I would be inclined to take Ottawa and a very generous 7.5-point spread.
Doc's: The boxing world just experienced one shocking upset in the heavyweight division with Andy Ruiz beating Anthony Joshua. Can lightning strike twice this Saturday night in Las Vegas with Tyson Fury listed as a prohibitive favorite against Tom Schwarz?
RE: There is actually quite a bit of value in Schwarz as a 14-to-1 underdog. Anything can happen on one thunderous punch in the heavyweight division, which is more than enough reason to go with a small wager on the underdog in this fight.
