Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
The month of July marks the height of the summer sports betting season at Doc's Sports Service. We continue to thrive as a recognized leader and trusted name in the sports handicapping industry since 1971. A good deal of that ongoing success has been forged from long-standing relationships with the top expert handicappers in the nation. Raphael Esparza has been a key member of Doc's team going back to a long and successful run in the Las Vegas sportsbook industry. That career culminated with in 2013 when he retired as the Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Resorts' Aria.
The past six years have been completely dedicated to running a successful sports investment business from his home base in Las Vegas as well as from the Big Easy in New Orleans. From big unit plays for all the major sports to prop betting picks for the next big event in the world of entertainment, Esparza offers selection packages that span a wide selection of betting options. Each week, Doc's gets the opportunity to gain his valuable insight into some the hottest trending betting topics in the world of sports.
Doc's: The balance of power in the NBA has been rocked in the early stages of free agency led by Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving moving on to Brooklyn to continue their NBA careers. The online books quickly reacted with updated NBA futures, so which team has the best betting value to win next season's championship?
RE: Nobody is talking about the moves that Utah, Indiana and Philadelphia made to add quite a bit of value to their futures odds. We still have to wait and see where Kawhi Leonard ends up, but those three teams would be at the top of my list from a value standpoint.
Doc's: The third Grand Slam event in tennis is underway this week with the opening rounds of Wimbledon. Any thoughts on where the best value lies in both the men's and women's odds to win this year's tournament?
RE: The competition in both the men's and women's bracket should remain tight right up to the championship matches. I am expecting a few more big upsets to shake things up as well after Venus Williams got knocked out early. If I had to pick a winner right now, it would be Novak Djokovic on the men's side and Angelique Kerber on the women's side.
Doc's: The Women's World Cup continues with Tuesday's semifinal match between USA and England. Which team do you have winning Wednesday's other semifinal between Sweden and the Netherlands?
RE: I have been touting the Netherlands since the beginning of this tournament and I have them advancing to the championship match this Sunday.
Doc's: The CFL just wrapped up its first three weeks of betting action with Monday's Canada Day matchup between Toronto and Saskatchewan. Do you have any insight into the early results as far as the top-valued team to win this year's Grey Cup?
RE: Overall, I have been impressed with the level of play on offense in many of the early games. I would think the best value to win a Grey Cup is still in the West with Winnipeg and Edmonton closing the gap with Calgary.
Doc's: We all know that Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island on the 4 th of July is high on your betting radar this week. You just posted your official prop bet odds on Doc's site, so what is your play on the "over/under" on 73.5 hot dogs eaten by the overall men's winner?
RE: Joey Chestnut set the record last season at 74 hot dogs, but I do see him tying or beating that mark this year. I like the +110 odds on the under with 71 to 72 dogs winning the men's competition.
