Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
The Super Bowl is the biggest single-day sports betting event of the year. For this year's big game, Doc's Sports Service has you covered with a wide array of selection packages featuring recommended unit plays for every aspect of Super Bowl LIII. Leading the charge when it comes to betting Super Bowl props is Raphael Esparza . Going back to his days when he was on the other side of the counter as Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Resorts' Aria until his retirement in 2013, he still remains a leading expert in finding the best value in the numbers.
Docs gets a chance to chat with the former Vegas Sports Informer on a regular basis. In somewhat of a departure from our regular Q&A, we are looking for a few value plays for Sunday when it comes to betting Super Bowl props.
Doc's: The crazier the better has always been your mantra when it comes to betting props. However, lets starts things off with a value prop play for some actual aspect of Sunday's game. Are there any specific player props that rank high on the list for the two starting quarterbacks in this year's game; Tom Brady for New England and Jared Goff for the Los Angeles Rams?
RE: You should always match your expectations for the game with your actual prop bets. You could look at the "over" on 0.5 interceptions for both quarterbacks in a tougher defensive struggle than most bettors expect. I might be tempted to go with the over 8.5 on Goff's total rushing yards in another one of my 'bet what you expect' prop picks.
Doc's: The running game could play a prominent role in this game for either team. Which Rams' back do you have rushing for more yards; Todd Gurley or CJ Anderson?
RE: I am not expecting all that much from Gurley running the ball on Sunday. I still do not think he is 100 percent for this game since getting hurt towards the end of the regular season. This could once again open the door to Anderson getting the bulk of the carries.
Doc's: Cross sports props are always a big part of the mix when the Super Bowl rolls around. Do you have any cross sports props you are looking at for this Sunday's betting action when it comes to the NBA or college basketball?
RE: For an NBA cross sport prop, I am looking at Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook's total points, rebounds and assists against the Boston Celtics adding up to more than Patriots' running back Rex Burkhead's total rushing and receiving yards. I also like the Rams kicking more field goals then the goals the LA Kings score in Saturday's road game against the New York Islanders as an NHL cross sport prop.
Doc's: Last week in an early prop pick, you told Doc's readers to bet on Gladys Knight wearing pants to sing the National Anthem. What would be your top prop bet for something pertaining to the Super Bowl show at halftime?
RE: I would go with the over at -180 that Maroon 5 sings more than 3.5 songs. It sounds like a risky bet, but I have already come up with three songs they almost have to play. You can probably add in one more with a guest performer joining them on stage.
Doc's: As hard as we tried to run the gambit when it comes to Super Bowl props, we also know that you are probably looking at a few things we never even thought of. What would be your top prop play for Super Bowl LIII?
RE: This would not be my top prop, but you can get +700 odds betting that a performer will fall down during the halftime show. The odds that nobody fals are set at +2000, but you never know what could happen on live TV.
