Doc's: Last week, you noted goalie Tuukka Rask's stellar play in this year's NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs as a big reason why you liked Boston in the NHL Finals against St. Louis. What is your 'best bet' pick for the length of this series in light of Monday night's Game 1 win by the Bruins?
RE: I think Boston wins this series in five games if it continues to play like it did in the second and third period of Game 1. However, if the Bruins successfully defend home ice by winning Game 2, you might want to take a small flyer on the Blues' new inflated series price. Anything can still happen if St. Louis finds a way to win two at home.
Doc's: NBA's Eastern Conference Champion Toronto Raptors looked rather impressive in their recent four-game winning streak against Milwaukee after falling behind 0-2 in the conference finals. Can you give us your 'best bet' pick for the actual length of this season's NBA Finals against Golden State?
RE: Milwaukee is still a one-dimensional team. I still cannot see Toronto shutting down all of Golden State's weapons to take this series past five or six games. The other factor is Kawhi Leonard's overall health. He left quite a bit on the court in his last two series.
Doc's: Last week we talked about Minnesota as a heavy favorite to win the AL Central against the previously favored Cleveland Indians. Turning to the competitive race to win the NL Central Division, which team has the inside track to the title at the quarter pole?
RE: Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Louis should keep things tight in the division race all season long. I would give the slight edge to the Cubs given the overall power in their lineup. However, the moves made at this year's MLB trade deadline could be a huge deciding factor in which of these three teams ends up at the top of the NL Central standings.
Doc's: The CFL preseason is underway ahead of Week 1 of the regular season in mid-June. The British Columbia Lions added former Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly in the offseason. Is this enough to significantly close the gap with favored Calgary in the West Division?
RE: There is some definite value to be found shopping CFL futures in general since this league is not at the top of the priority list for offshore books right now. Reilly should make things a bit more interesting for BC, but I would have to take a closer look at the entire picture in the West before committing one way or the other.
Doc's: Other than the NBA and NHL Finals, is there anything else on the betting radar heading into the final week of May?
RE: There are always a few good fights on the card for boxing and the UFC, but I have been focusing my attention on futures odds for the upcoming College World Series. The current college baseball regional action will determine the actual field for this year's event starting in mid-June. You should also find some prop odds at MyBookie for this week's Skripps National Spelling Bee.
