Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
October is an incredible time of year for sports bettors. The four biggest US professional leagues are in action at the same time. You have the NFL season in full gear, MLB playoffs underway, NHL betting early in the month, and a new season of NBA basketball by the end of October.
Doc's Sports Service has you covered for all the action as does one of our expert handicappers Raphael Esparza . He honed his craft during a long and successful career in the Las Vegas sportsbook industry. His biggest claim to fame in that career was holding the prestigious position as the Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Resorts' Aria until his retirement in 2013.
Never one to slow down, Esparza shifted all of his energy to running a successful sports investment business from his home base in Las Vegas as well as from the Big Easy in New Orleans. From big unit plays for all the major sports to unique prop bet tips for betting options outside the realm of mainstream sports, he has you covered. Every Tuesday, Doc's meets with the former Vegas Sports Informer to cover the hottest trending topics in the world of sports.
Doc's: The first quarter of the NFL regular season is already in the books, and it looks like parity is alive and well, especially when you look at the NFC. In one of the bigger matchups for Week 5, how do you see the Green Bay at Dallas game playing out with each team coming off its first loss?
RE: Right now I am focused on the line movement for this game. Green Bay has my interest at 3.5 points, but there may be a stronger play on the "over" if the current total line holds at 46.5 points.
Doc's: Over in the college ranks, Clemson lost some ground to No. 2 with last week's close call against North Carolina. Heading into Week 6, what does your NCAAF Top 5 list look like?
RE: Clemson dropped down to No. 3 in my Top 5, with Alabama at the top of the list followed by Ohio State. I would put Georgia in the No. 4 position and move Oklahoma to No. 5. LSU would be No. 6 mainly because I think the Tigers are a bit overrated right now given their early schedule. They play Utah State this Saturday , but it will be interesting to see how they do in next week's game on the road against Florida.
Doc's: Turning to the MLB postseason and giving Houston the automatic pass in an ALDS matchup against the winner of the AL wild card game, who do you like advancing from the other ALDS between the New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins?
RE: This is probably going to be the best of the four division series. The slight lean is towards the Yankees, but the Twins can stand toe-to-toe with New York when it comes to scoring runs. At the very least, I see this series going the full five games.
Doc's: Advancing the Los Angles Dodgers through the first playoff round against Milwaukee or Washington, who do you have in the second NLDS between St. Louis and Atlanta?
RE: I would take Atlanta in four games as the better all-around team. I also put more weight on the Braves' home-field advantage. The Cardinals were just one game above .500 on the road this season.
Doc's: With the new NHL regular season starting up this week, do you have any general betting tips on how to bet the early games?
RE: From a general standpoint, I do think that goalies and defense are a bit ahead of offense and goal scoring in the early part of the season. This automatically makes me interested in the under play for games with total lines of six or higher. For example this Wednesday, if I can get Ottawa at Toronto at 6.5 goals on the total line, I am going under in that game.
