The former Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Resorts' Aria retired from the Las Vegas sportsbook industry back in 2013. However, he remains as busy as ever running a successful sports investment business from his home base in Las Vegas as well as from the Big Easy in New Orleans.
Whether you are looking for winning plays for Sunday's top NFL matchups or prop bet picks for the latest Hollywood movie premier, Raphael has you covered with one of widest arrays of betting options in industry. Every Tuesday, Doc's gets the unique opportunity go one-on-one with the former Vegas Sports Informer to get an insider's perspective on the hottest trending topics in the world of sports.
Doc's: New England just covered one of the largest NFL pointspreads in recent memory in a completely dominating 43-0 whitewash of AFC East rival Miami. How much money did the books lose on that game?
RE: This was definitely one of the more costly games for the books last Sunday. New England got a fair amount of action on the moneyline despite some prohibitive odds. The Patriots were also a big part of quite a few parlay bets as well as pleasers and teasers.
Doc's: In our continuing coverage of early NFL overreactions, are you ready to write off Pittsburgh in the AFC and New Orleans in the NFC due to major injuries to each team's starting quarterback?
RE: I would have to agree that Pittsburgh is in some major trouble losing Ben Roethlisberger for the entire season. The Steelers already have a number of issues to deal with moving forward. New Orleans' fate lies in the hands of Teddy Bridgewater. If he can help the Saints stay competitive and manufacture some wins until Drew Brees is healthy, this team should still be right in the thick of the NFC South title race.
Doc's: Turning to the college ranks, early conference play takes center stage in Week 4 of the season. The big showdown in the Big Ten sends No. 11 Michigan on the road to face No. 13 Wisconsin with the Badgers favored by three points. Near and dear to our hearts at Docs, how do you see this game playing out?
RE: Great matchup with a possible lean towards the total line. It opened at 47 points, and it was quickly bet down to 43.5. The Badgers are going to have to put some points on the board to get past Michigan in what could turn into a higher-scoring game than most bettors are expecting.
Doc's: The only real drama left in the MLB regular season is the tight three-way race between St. Louis, Chicago and Milwaukee in the NL Central. We have been covering this race all season long, with your beloved Cubs in the thick of things. Which team do you have taking the top spot in light of recent results?
RE: As a big Cubs' fan, I would still have to defer to the Cardinals having the overall edge in this race. The Brewers will probably remain on the outside looking in. Pitching struggles and injuries are still working against Chicago. This weekend's four-game series between St. Louis and the Cubs at Wrigley will go a long way towards deciding this race. As will a three-game rematch in St. Louis to close out the regular season schedule.
Doc's: There is a great field of three-year old thoroughbreds lining up to run in Saturday's $1 million Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing near Philadelphia. Do you have any early thoughts how to bet this race?
RE: My focus will be on track conditions for this race. If it remains fast with good weather, the favorites such as Maximum Security, Improbable and War of Will should prevail.
