Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
Early June might be thought of by some as the beginning of the offseason for sports betting, but Doc's Sports Service remains in full swing with selections available for everything that is still on the board at your favorite online sportsbook. Raphael Esparza has already earned his reputation as one of the top sports handicappers in the nation during a long and successful run in the Las Vegas sportsbook industry. As a key member of the team at Doc's, that career culminated in 2013 with a prestigious run as the Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Resorts' Aria.
These days, the former Vegas Sports Informer continues to run a very successful sports investment business from his home base in Las Vegas as well as from the Big Easy in New Orleans. His selection packages that are offered through Doc's site span one of widest arrays of betting options in the sports betting industry today. We are thrilled to gain his expert insight into some of the hottest trending betting topics each week in the world of sports.
Doc's: We have been closely following this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs from the opening round. Heading into Thursday night's pivotal Game 5 in Boston with the series tied at two games apiece, how do you see this one playing out?
RE: This series is on a clear path to a Game 7 showdown with Boston winning on Thursday night and St. Louis winning Game 6 at home. I would still go with the Bruins overall given their edge in goal with Tuukka Rask.
Doc's: Toronto was able to gain a split at home against Golden State through the first two games of this season's NBA Finals. What is your 'best bet' play for Wednesday night's Game 3 out on the West Coast?
RE: I think you either have to go with Toronto and the six points if you do like the Raptors or take a pass on Game 3 and wait for Friday night's Game 4. Golden State's injury situation has just too many balls up in the air right now.
Doc's: Over in the WNBA, the new season is just getting underway. Most online books have the Las Vegas Aces as favorites to win this year's championship. We saw the Vegas Golden Knights make a solid run at the title in their first season in the NHL, can the Aces do the same in their second WNBA season in town?
RE: The Aces are good enough to win a title if everything falls into place. Right now, it is too hard to get a solid read on the Western Conference with so many big injuries early in the season. I have been impressed with the early play of the Connecticut Mystics as a legitimate contender out of the Eastern Conference.
Doc's: The 2019 Belmont Stakes wraps up a very interesting Triple Crown racing series for the top three-year-old thoroughbreds this year. Do you have any bold prediction on how to bet the main event this Saturday on Belmont Park's race card?
RE: This should be a good race with a great head-to-head matchup between Tacitus as the favorite and War of Will as the next-best horse in the projected field. Right now, I am more focused on Friday's race card at Belmont Park with four very interesting graded stakes races on the board.
Doc's: We have talked about professional boxing's attempt to reinvigorate the heavyweight division. Was Andy Ruiz Jr's stunning upset of Anthony Joshua on Saturday good or bad for the fight game?
RE: The simple fact that people are talking about that fight after the fact is good for boxing. Anything that calls attention to the heavyweight division is also good for the sport. Now if Tyson Fury loses to Tom Schwarz as a huge favorite in his next fight on June 15, we would really have something to talk about.
