Sports Betting Future Odds: Playoffs?!?! Don't Forget About Kentucky Derby
Playoffs are ongoing in the NBA and NHL, but the horses take center stage
this weekend at Churchill Downs. Yes, the Triple Crown season has arrived
with the Kentucky Derby. Meanwhile, the NFL Draft has come and gone, so
it's time to start looking ahead to the upcoming 2019 campaign-and beyond.

Kentucky Derby
Omaha Beach (+450)
- The favorite drew post No. 12 earlier this week, which may be a bit too
far outside for his liking but also should not be a make-or-break deal.
Omaha Beach
has won three consecutive races, including the Arkansas Derby on April 13.
Improbable (+500)
- Two of the top Kentucky Derby choices went one-two in Arkansas, where
Improbable finished runner-up to Omaha Beach. This horse is related to 1977
Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew and 1992 Belmont Stakes champ A.P. Indy.
Game Winner (+500)
- Both Game Winner and Improbable are trained by Bob Baffert, who was
behind both of the recent Triple Crown winners (American Pharoah and
Justify). Coming from the same Seattle Slew-A.P. Indy line, Game Winner got
second at Santa Anita.
Roadster (+550)
- It was another one of Baffert's horses, Roadster, who edged out Game
Winner at Santa Anita on April 6. Roadster has won three of his last four
starts, with the only blemish in September of last year (finished third
place behind Game Winner).
Offensive Rookie of the Year
Kyler Murray (+600)
- To the surprise of no one, the Cardinals drafted Murray No. 1 overall and
shipped Josh Rosen to Miami. The former Oklahoma quarterback and reigning
Heisman Trophy winner is the undisputed starter in Arizona, where Brett
Hundley-a similar kind of signal-caller-has been brought in to be the
backup.
Dwayne Haskins (+700)
- Will Haskins be the starter right away in Washington? That remains to be
seen, as both Alex Smith and Colt McCoy are still on the roster but coming
off injuries. Whenever he gets on the field, the former Ohio State standout
will be playing with a chip on his shoulder after the Giants passed on him
at No. 6.
Josh Jacobs (+800)
- Raiders head coach Jon Gruden used one of his smorgasbord of picks to
select a running back, getting Jacobs at 24th overall. He rushed
for 640 yards and 11 touchdowns at Alabama this past season and also caught
20 balls out of the backfield. Marshawn Lynch has retired, so playing time
in Oakland is available.
Marquise Brown (+1100)
- The Ravens needed an upgrade at wide receiver in the worst way.
Up-and-coming quarterback Lamar Jackson needs help and did not have a whole
lot of it in 2018. Brown hauled in 75 passes from Murray for 1,318 yards
and 10 touchdowns at Oklahoma last season before getting taken No. 25
overall.
2020 NFL Draft No. 1 pick
Tua Tagovailoa (+250)
- Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay are on to 2020, so the rest of us will do
the same. There is already talk of the worst teams in the NFL tanking for
Tua-but, of course, not all of those teams need a quarterback. In fact, on
paper very few teams still need one. Oakland, though, may be ready to move
on from Derek Carr.
Justin Herbert (+350)
- If the Raiders get the top pick or if some other team that ends up
needing a QB either finishes with the worst record or trades up, could
Herbert be the guy? The Eugene, Ore. native and Oregon star stands at 6'6''
and 233 pounds, so his size is ideal. He threw for 3,151 yards and 29
touchdowns as a junior.
Jake Fromm (+400)
- Fromm cannot be discounted from the equation, but his chances aren't
great for obvious reasons. Almost every squad in the NFL has its perceived
franchise quarterback at the moment, and Fromm is not rated as highly as
Tagovailoa. He also plays in a run-heavy offense at Georgia, so his 2020
combine work is key.
Chase Young (+700)
- On the defensive side of the ball, Young looks like the upcoming star of
the show. The Ohio State DE tips the scales at 6'5'' and 265 pounds to go
along with impressive speed. He recorded 9.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for
loss in 2018. Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown is also a +700 fourth
choice.
Wells Fargo Championship
(
Bovada Sportsbook
)
Rory McIlroy (+600)
- In the 16-year history of this event, McIlroy is the only two-time
champion (2010, 2015). He placed T16 last spring and likely would have
contended if not for a surprising second-round 76. The 29-year-old is
playing stellar golf this season, with seven top-10 performances in nine
appearances.
Jason Day (+1000)
- Day has been inconsistent in 2019 and physical problems remain a concern,
but he has still managed to deliver four top-10 showings in his past seven
starts-including a T8 at The Players Championship and a T5 at the Masters.
The world No. 14 from Australia is the Wells Fargo's defending champion.
Justin Rose (+1100)
- Rose says he has no idea where his game is right now, but Rose's
B-game-if that's where it is-is often better than most players' best. The
second-ranked Englishman triumphed at Torrey Pines in January and finished
T8 at The Players before unexpectedly missing the cut in Augusta.
Rickie Fowler (+1100)
- Fowler lifted the trophy in Charlotte seven years ago, beating McIlroy
and D.A. Points in a playoff. He finished T21 last year. The 30-year-old
American is seeking his second win in 2019, having previously prevailed in
Phoenix on Super Bowl Sunday. He is coming off a T9 result at the Masters.
