This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
A. Alliance of American Football
. The AAF just barely lasted longer than Britney Spears and Jason
Alexander. Effective immediately, the startup football league announced on
Tuesday that it is terminating operations. Thank u, next (XFL).
B. Braves
. Atlanta didn't do much spending in the offseason, but it locked up Ronald
Acuna with what looks like a team-friendly eight-year, $100 extension on
Tuesday. That will keep Acuna around through at least 2026, and the club
has options for 2027 and 2028.
The Braves are -120 home favorites
over the Cubs on Wednesday, per MyBookie.ag.
C. Christian Yelich
. The reigning National League MVP is picking up right where he left off in
2018. Through six games, Yelich is batting .409 with four home runs and
eight RBIs. Milwaukee is +1600 at
BetOnline Sportsbook
to win the World Series.
D. Domingo Santana
. Don't look now, but the Mariners are the best team in baseball. They
boast a 7-1 record, and Santana is hitting .303 with three homers, 11 RBIs,
seven runs scored, and two stolen bases.
E. Edwards, Carsen
. Edwards could have gone down in history as having a Kemba Walker-like
NCAA Tournament. Purdue's junior guard scored 27 points against Old
Dominion, 42 against Villanova, 29 against Tennessee, and 42 against
Virginia in Saturday's Sweet 16 showdown. The Boilermakers led by three
points in the closing seconds of regulation, but the Cavaliers tied it in
miracle fashion by making the first of two free-throws, purposely missing
the second, tipping the rebound out, and getting a buzzer-beater by Mamadi
Diakite. The 'Hoos ended up prevailing 80-75 in overtime, overcoming
Edwards' 10-for-19 performance from three-point range.
Virginia is a -5 favorite
over Auburn on Saturday, according to Bovada Sportsbook.
F. Fifty
. Alex Ovechkin scored his 50th goal of the season (and 51 st, for that matter) in the Capitals' win over Tampa Bay last
weekend. He became just the third player in NHL history to record eight
50-goal seasons. Washington is +1000 at XBet.ag
to win the Stanley Cup.
G. Geno Auriemma
. A two seed? Seriously? A two seed?!?! But instead of complaining
about it, Auriemma and his UConn squad got down to business and punched
another ticket to the Final Four. The Huskies beat Louisville 80-73 this
past Sunday and will go up against longtime rival Notre Dame in the semis.
H. Hussle, Nipsey
. The 33-year-old rapper was shot and killed outside his clothing store in
Los Angeles this past Sunday, sparking a wave of tributes-especially from
NBA players. R.I.P.
I.
Injuries
. Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar (.297, 27 HR, 92 RBI as a rookie) is
on the injured list with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. There is a
chance that surgery will be required, which would leave the 24-year-old out
for the season. Meanwhile, outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is also on the
10-day injured list due to a biceps strain.
J. Jazz
. Utah is in the midst of a league-best five-game winning streak. It still
has a chance for home-court advantage for round one in the Western
Conference playoffs. 5Dimes Sportsbook has
the Jazz as -10.5 favorites at Phoenix on Wednesday.
K. Kevin Kisner
. After finishing runner-up at last year's WGC-Dell Technologies Match
Play, Kisner not only got back to the final but also went one step further
and won it on Sunday. The former UGA standout beat former Georgia Tech star
Matt Kuchar 3-and-2 in the championship match. By the way, both of these
guys are absolute savages. Kisner recently said that Patrick Reed's college
teammates wouldn't "piss on him if he was on fire;" Kuchar basically didn't
give Segio Garcia a seven-inch putt during their quarterfinal match. Kuchar
is +1800 at
GT Bets
to win this week's Valero Texas Open.
L. Lucas Bjerregaard
. Neither Kisner nor Kuchar had to deal with Tiger Woods last weekend, as
the 14-time major champion got bounced by Bjerregaard in the quarterfinals.
Tiger had knocked out Rory McIlroy earlier on Saturday, but he missed a
four-foot par putt on the 18th hole to lose at the hands of the
unheralded 27-year-old Dane. BookMaker has Tiger
at +1700 to win the Masters next week.
M. Miami Open
. Father Time may be undefeated, but it's having a rough go of it with
Roger Federer (and Tom Brady, and for a while Joseph "Blue" Pulaski from Old School). Federer, 37, reached last month's Indian Wells final
and then two weeks later triumphed in Miami. The Swiss is No. 4 in the
world and No. 1 in 2019 ranking points.
N. Nowitzki, Dirk
. The Mavericks aren't exactly trying to win. Heck, they've played Nowtizki
for at least 26 minutes in three of the last five games! Nonetheless,
Dallas is 3-2 in in its last five with victories over Golden State,
Oklahoma City, and Philadelphia-the latter two without Luka Doncic. The
Mavericks must give up their 2019 first-round draft pick to the Hawks if it
isn't in the top five, stemming from last year's deal involving Doncic and
Trae Young. Sure enough, Dallas currently owns the NBA's sixth-worst record
and none other than Atlanta is the fifth-worst team.
O. Oilers
. The Oilers are mired in a disastrous four-game losing streak (0-3-1) that
has ended their postseason hopes. They will miss the playoffs for the 12 th time in the last 13 seasons. Wayne Gretzky ain't walkin'
through that door….
P. Progress
. As expected, Clayton Kershaw is starting on Opening Day…well, in
Triple-A. Kershaw has progressed well enough to make a rehab start for
Oklahoma City Dodgers, taking the mound for their opener on Thursday.
Q. Quick, Jonathan
. The 2018-19 campaign cannot end quickly enough for Quick. Los Angeles'
veteran goalie is 15-23-7 with 3.41 goals-against average and .887 save
percentage after watching the lamp light behind him a laughable seven times
during Monday's loss to Calgary. He was mercifully pulled in the third
period.
The Flames are -160 favorites
at Anaheim on Wednesday, as indicated by BetOnline Sportsbook.
R. Robert Kraft
. It hasn't exactly been an ideal spring for the Patriots' owner. First, of
course, he was hit with soliciting prostitution charges stemming from a
visit to the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter, Fla. on the day of the AFC
Championship. Now, his team is officially beginning a post-Rob Grownkowski
era after the star tight end announced his retirement from football last
month.
S. Sabres
. The Oilers stink. Quick is terrible. But the Sabres make even them look
good. Buffalo has lost a hard-to-believe 15 of its last 16 games, including
a current eight-game losing streak.
T.
Texas Tech
. Channeling their inner Virginia, the Red Raiders held opponents to 57,
58, 44, and 69 points en route to the Final Four. In other words, a UVA-TT
National Championship would be basketball's answer to the Patriots-Rams
Super Bowl. Jarrett Culver is +700 at MyBookie.ag to win
NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
U. UEFA Champions League
. Champions League action resumes next week with quarterfinal action. Four
English Premier League clubs are still alive.
Bovada Sportsbook
has Manchester City as a +225 favorite to win it all.
V. Virginia
. Only one ACC team is through to the Final Four, and it isn't Duke. And
it's not even UNC. But it isn't a surprise, either. UVA preceded its wild
win over Purdue by beating Gardner-Webb, Oklahoma, and Oregon.
W. Westbrook, Russell
. Westbrook made more history on Tuesday, becoming the second player ever
in the NBA after Wilt Chamberlain to deliver a 20-20-20 triple-double.
OKC's star guard went for 20 points, 20 rebounds, and 21 assists during a
119-103 victory over the Lakers.
X. Xhaka, Granit
. Xhaka missed Arsenal's EPL match against Newcastle United on Monday due
to an injury. No matter; the Gunners prevailed 2-0 and remain in third
place on the table.
Y. Young, Trae
. Why do the Hawks keep winning when they have a golden chance to steal
Dallas' pick? Young is just too good. And it just doesn't matter since the
Mavs also keep winning. Young produced an off-balance, put-back
buzzer-beater to stun Milwaukee 136-135 in overtime this past Sunday.
Atlanta is a +4 home underdog
against Philadelphia on Wednesday, per BookMaker.
Z. Zion Williamson
. Bad news for Zion: he's out of the tournament following Duke's one-point
loss to Michigan State. Good news for Zion: he's one step closer to a
massive shoe deal.
YouWager.eu
has Michigan State as a -2.5 favorite over Texas Tech in the Final Four.
