Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
Smart sports bettors understand the value in gaining an edge over the sportsbooks with the help of a professional selection service such as Doc's Sports. We have been helping sports bettors increase their return on investment for close to 50 years behind a team of expert handicappers that rank as some of the best in the nation. When it comes to 'best of the best' in expert sports handicapping, you would have to include the name Raphael Esparza in this elite group. He first made a name for himself during a long and successful career in the Las Vegas sportsbook industry that culminated as the Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Resorts' Aria.
While retiring from that position in 2013 when he was better known as the Vegas Sports Informer, his reputation as one of the top sports handicappers in the nation has expanded during his time in Las Vegas and more recently the Big Easy in New Orleans running his own sports investment firm. Every week, Doc's gets a chance to chat with Esparza about some of the hottest tending topics in the world of sports betting.
Doc's: It was widely reported that the Las Vegas sportsbooks took a rather bad beating by the betting public in regard to the results of last week's NFL games. From your experience, do the books make any kind of adjustments to the following week's betting lines coming off a steep loss?
RE: When popular betting teams cover, the books lose. It has always been that way, and there is nothing any book can do to stop it. The only thing you could see this week is tighter betting limits on certain games, especially when it comes to extended parlay plays.
Doc's: This Sunday's NFL schedule sends both New Orleans and New England on the road as solid favorites coming off huge victories both straight-up and against the spread in last Sunday's matchups. Would you keep riding each of these NFL powers ATS this week given the current roll they are both on?
RE: My general rule of thumb is to keep riding hot teams ATS until they cool. Successful sports betting is a marathon not a sprint. I am much more interested in riding hot streaks than trying to figure out when they are going to end by betting against a hot team.
Doc's: Alabama clearly proved that it is the best team in the nation with last Saturday's dominating road victory against LSU. Do you see Clemson, Notre Dame and Michigan also living up to some lofty expectations by winning out to fill in the rest of the four-team field for this year's College Football Playoff?
RE: All three would all have to win out, which is well within each team's capabilities. Michigan has the toughest test on the remaining schedule against Ohio State, but it is far from a lock that Clemson and/or Notre Dame cruise right into this season's CFP.
Doc's: A new season of college basketball is set to get underway with the opening round of games filling Tuesday night's betting board. Which way would you lean in the featured showdown on ESPN between No. 4 Duke and No. 2 Kentucky in a neutral-site meeting in the State Farm Champion Classic?
RE: I am more interested in watching some of the new faces in both Duke and Kentucky's lineup than focusing on the outcome of that matchup. The game I would probably bet is Kansas as a five-point favorite against Michigan State. Right now, the Jayhawks appear to be the most complete college basketball team in the nation. I am also touting Nevada as one of the best teams outside the Power 5.
Doc's: With football and basketball dominating bettor's attention heading into the second weekend in November, what else are you working on right now that could provide an interesting distraction from all the major betting sports?
RE: Right off the bat, I would highly recommend looking into DAZN as a relatively new streaming service for boxing at just $9 a month. You also have UFC Fight Night on FOX Sports this Saturday. I will be releasing plays for Sunday's CFL playoffs as well as for this year's MLS postseason games.
