Every week, we get a chance to pick Esparza's brain to get his expert opinion on some of the hottest trending topics in the world of sports betting.
Doc's: The favorites had the slight edge in the betting results for Week 1 in the NFL with the total line trending towards the "over". Does this mean that the betting public is 1-0 against the books to start the new season?
Doc's: To you, what was the more shocking result in the NFL's first round of games that counted in the standings; New Orleans' straight-up loss to Tampa Bay or Cleveland's SU tie against Pittsburgh?
RE: I was not all that shocked about the Cleveland game since those two teams always play one another tough. I am stunned with the Saints' loss to Tampa Bay behind Ryan Fitzpatrick doing his best Joe Montana impersonation. The expectation level was through the roof for this team in the local New Orleans' media, so this was a big dose of reality for these Super Bowl contenders.
Doc's: Turning to this Sunday's NFL schedule, can you give us few teams that have piqued your interest when it comes to the current betting lines for this second round of games.
RE: The public's money was on the New York Giants last week as underdogs against Jacksonville, so I am extremely interested in how the Jaguars' defense holds up this week against New England. I am looking for the Saints to bounce back against the Browns, but the eight points as home favorites has me somewhat nervous. I also like Atlanta at home over Carolina as long as that number stays at six .
Doc's: We already know that you see the SEC in college football as somewhat overhyped in the eyes of the media and the betting public. However, the biggest matchup on the board in Week 3 pits LSU on the road against Auburn in a game with early playoff ramifications. How do you see this SEC showdown playing out?
RE: I think you are going to find out that LSU's Week 1 win against Miami was not as impressive as it first appeared to be, since the Hurricanes were a bit overrated to begin with. Auburn and its high-powered running game would be my pick in this matchup, but I am waiting to see if I can get a better number than the current 9.5-point spread .
Doc's: We also know that you love betting on the Mid Majors in college football given the value you can often find in the betting lines. You are a perfect two for two with your free weekly Mid-Major picks for Doc's, so can you give an early glimpse at which game you might be eying up for this week's free selection?
RE: Texas-San Antonio getting 21.5 points on the road against Kansas State caught my early eye. I liked the way the Roadrunners hung tough against Baylor last week. I am also looking at Tulane as a field-goal road favorite against UAB. I used the Green Wave as my Week 1 pick against Wake Forest, and they covered with the seven-point spread.
