Doc's: Each week during the NFL season we like to recap the ongoing battle between the betting public and the sportsbooks taking their bets. Week 4 had its fair share of surprises, so which games had the biggest impact on each side's fortunes this time around?
RE: As an overall summary, I would say that the books eked out the smallest of gains with money trading hands on a number of games. Atlanta and Pittsburgh losing were big winners for the books, but the public cashed in big on New England and Jacksonville. The public was also heavy on Cleveland with the sharp money going to Oakland to cancel each other out.
Doc's: One of the biggest betting matchups on this week's NFL slate of games is Jacksonville's shutdown defense going on the road to Kansas City to try and ground the high-flying Chiefs. How do you see this showdown between two of the AFC's top teams shaking out on Sunday?
RE: We saw Denver's defense give Kansas City some problems on Monday night, and Jacksonville will be an even tougher test this Sunday playing on a shorter week. There is definitely some value in the Jaguars getting a field goal on the road if they can keep the scoring lower than expected.
Doc's: Ohio State's recent win against Penn State has established the Buckeyes as one of the top three teams in the nation along with Alabama and Georgia. There are a number of teams that have worked their way into the early mix for that fourth and final playoff spot such as LSU and Notre Dame with fast starts. Which team would you pencil-in as the fourth-best team in the nation right now?
RE: I would agree that Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State are in the driver seat through the first five weeks with Clemson suddenly looking rather vulnerable in the No. 4 spot. LSU loses quite a bit a value with Georgia and Alabama still on the schedule, and Oklahoma could easily fall to Texas this Saturday. Notre Dame could slide into playoff position if all three of those teams falter somewhere along the way.
Doc's: A new season of hockey in the NHL gets underway this week. We wanted to get your thoughts on what kind of early-season betting value does the home-town Vegas Golden Knights have coming off their magical run last season all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals as an expansion team?
RE: It is going to be extremely hard for Vegas to mirror last year's success. You should be able to get some good numbers early in the season betting against the Golden Knights until the oddsmakers adjust. My value team to go with early in the season from the Pacific Division is the San Jose Sharks
Doc's: We know that betting on professional wresting is big business for you as a fan as well as an expert handicapper. Can you give us an early look at some of your top betting options for this Saturday's WWE Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia?
RE: My official betting preview will be posted on Doc's blog later this week along with some added prop bets for this event. As a general observation, I would lean towards the favorites since it will take place overseas where the audience is looking for the biggest stars to win. My top betting favorite would be The Undertaker at -170 against Triple H as a +130 underdog in the final match of the night.
