Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
Since 1971, Doc's Sports has been a household name for serious sports bettors who are committed to increasing their return on investment with the help of a few of the top expert handicappers in the nation. Raphael Esparza has been a valued member of this team for quite some time as he honed his expert handicapping skills during a long and successful career in the Las Vegas sportsbook industry.
He retired from that industry in 2013, holding the prestigious position as the Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Resorts' Aria. However, he remains as busy has ever with his highly-successful sports investment service. As documented on his home page at Docsports.com, he has posted one winning season after another in most of the major sports, and his selection packages also include secondary sports such as soccer, golf, boxing and MMA fighting in the UFC
Every week, the former Vegas Sports Informer give us a chance to pick his brain when it comes to the hottest tending topics in the world of sports betting and here is the latest discussion.
Doc's: There were no major surprises in the first week of the 2018 college football season, but can you give us some of your most interesting takeaways from the opening round of games?
RE: I would agree that there were not any major upsets among the marquee matchups on the Week 1 betting board, but do not tell that to fans of teams such as Arizona and UCLA. Each team's loss as a double-digit home favorite are major setbacks for a pair of Pac-12 programs that were looking for a fast start.
Doc's: Speaking of the Pac-12, there is a big conference showdown in Week 2 between the USC Trojans and the Stanford Cardinal with Stanford set as a 3.5-point home favorite . How do you see this game playing out on Saturday night?
RE: This is a huge game for both of these teams with Washington's loss to Auburn last week in terms of becoming the frontrunner in the nation out of the Pac-12. My slight lean would be towards Stanford behind its offensive line and punishing ground game.
Doc's: The NFL regular season gets underway this Thursday night with rematch of last season's Divisional Round playoff game between Atlanta and Philadelphia. Nick Foles is still the starting quarterback with the Eagles, so do you think he can lead them to another victory this time around?
RE: I am much more focused on the Nick Foles that led his team to a Super Bowl victory than the one that stumbled his way through a few meaningless series during the preseason. Media hype good or bad about anything that happened in the preseason needs to be heavily discounted heading into Week 1 of the regular season.
Doc's: Looking at the rest of the NFL games on the Week 1 schedule, are there any matchups that have moved to the top of your board as "must see" TV?
RE: For me, the first week of the new NFL season is all about the Monday night doubleheader. It has nothing to do with the actual matchups, but the simple fact that I can spend the day recapping all of Sunday's action with two more games to occupy my time on Monday.
Doc's: It is wall-to-wall football betting this weekend with Week 2 of the college season and opening day in the NFL. However, is there anything else on your personal betting radar over the next several days that you are working on?
RE: I just released some betting odds for the "over" and "under" on the projected Rotten Tomatoes approval ratings after the premier weekend of the new Predator movie starting on Friday. Sept. 14. The projected rating score was 63 percent, and I like the -130 betting odds it does go over that number.
