Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
Doc's Sports has been one of the most respected leaders in the sports betting industry for close to five decades mainly because of the expert sports handicappers that are part of this winning team. Raphael Esparza would have to be considered one of our perennial All-Stars given everything he has been able to accomplish in his sports betting career. In 2013, he wrapped up a long and successful career in the Las Vegas sportsbook industry that culminated with a prestigious stint as the Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Resorts' Aria.
He continues to run a very successful and diverse sports investment service from his home base in Las Vegas as well as from the Big Easy in New Orleans. On his home page at Doc's Sports' website , you can find weekly and monthly selection packages for most major sports. Right now, you can also get one-day packages for his MLB picks. This very affordable offer includes any high-unit MLB plays that are released for that particular day.
Doc's: The Boston Red Sox pulled off a very important four-game sweep of the AL East rival New York Yankees over the weekend to build a sizable lead in the division title race. At 79-34 overall heading into this week's action, is the AL Pennant and the 2018 MLB World Series title Boston's to lose?
RE: There is just too much uncertainty surrounding ace Chris Sale right now for me to sign off on the Red Sox winning it all. His sore shoulder doesn't appear to be all that serious, but there is no guarantee that he will return to top form once he comes off the DL.
Doc's: We have been working our way through your top team to watch this season in the major football conferences. With Wisconsin at the top of the list on the Big Ten and USC your top choice in the Pac-12, which team are you going with in the Big 12 as your team to watch?
RE: I would have to go with the consensus that Oklahoma is still the team to beat in the Big 12 this season. However, I would add TCU to my watch list heading into a Sept. 15 showdown against Ohio State. I also like West Virginia in this conference, but I think the Horned Frogs could give the Sooners a run for their money.
Doc's: You recently added a NFL Preseason betting package to your Doc's home page. Can you give us one or two general tips for betting on exhibition football in the NFL?
RE: The biggest tip is do not believe all the hype you hear from the media about training camp practices. In the words of Allen Iverson, "We are talking about practice." Baltimore's rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson may have looked great throwing the ball in a 7-on-7 drill, but he completed 4-of-10 passing attempts for 33 yards in last week's Hall of Fame Game. The other tip would be to take a closer look at the "under" on the total line if the number starts moving higher throughout the week. Scoring points in the preseason still comes at a premium.
Doc's: The CFL regular season enters Week 9 of its 18-game, 21-week schedule. What be your betting odds that Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens joins Johnny Manziel north the border in the CFL after his recent workout with Saskatchewan?
RE: Anything is possible, but the odds would have to be set rather high if this would turn into an actual bet. It is one thing to be in great physical shape. However, it is a whole new ball game to play professional football against players half your age.
Doc's: Given the diversity of the betting events you do cover as an expert handicapper, what are some of the things on your sports betting radar right now?
RE: It is a quiet weekend in boxing and MMA fighting, so I will spend most of this week firming up my selection package for a number of different NFL futures and betting props. I usually release them after the second week of the preseason. I will also be posting some pop culture betting props for the premier of the new Halloween movie this October in the not-too-distant future.
