Terrible Tuesdays: Peterman is Still Awful, Florida Flops Against Kentucky
Buffalo Bills quarterback Nathan Peterman threw a lot of interceptions in
limited time last season. He threw a couple more in Week 1 of the 2018
campaign as Buffalo got blown out by the Baltimore Ravens 47-3. On the
college gridiron, Florida suffered a dreadful home loss to Kentucky. Like
Dan Mullen with the Gators, Scott Frost took an early 'L' in his tenure
with Nebraska.

Nathan Peterman
. "Obviously, it wasn't a good showing," Peterman said. "We've got to do a
lot better, starting with me." Even "a lot" is an understatement. The Bills
lost to Baltimore by 44 points, and Peterman, who once threw five
interceptions in a single half of football last season, was picked off
twice before getting the boot with a stat line of 5-for-18 with an anemic
24 yards. The second-year signal-caller out of Pittsburgh was replaced by
first-round draft pick Josh Allen, who was not much better. Allen committed
no turnovers, but he finished a modest 6-of-15 for 74 yards.
The Bills are +7.5 home underdogs
against the Chargers in Week 2.
Atlanta Falcons
. The Falcons lost the Philadelphia Eagles 18-12 last Thursday and also
lost safety Keanu Neal for the season to a torn ACL. That is especially bad
news for a defense that will have to be strong as long as Atlanta's offense
continues to be this inept in the red zone. Matt Ryan and company scored
only one touchdown in five trips inside the Eagles' 20-yard line, and on
three occasions in the red zone they did not come away with a single point.
The Falcons are +229 to win the NFC South.
Florida
. Florida lost at home to Kentucky. You can't make this stuff up, folks.
The Gators were "only" -13.5 favorites, which says quite a lot about how
far the program has fallen compared to how much it used to be favored over
the visiting Wildcats during the glory days. These Gators did not cover the
13.5 points nor did they even win the game, as UK went into the swamp and
pulled off a 27-16 stunner. Adding insult to injury, or vice versa,
cornerback Marco Wilson is out for the season with a torn ACL that he
suffered in the first quarter. Additionally, running back Adarius Lemons
announced afterward that he plans on transferring. Lemons, who was
suspended for Florida's season opener, did not have a carry against
Kentucky and returned two kickoffs for 47 yards.
UF is a -19 home favorite over Colorado State this weekend
.
Scott Frost
. Not unlike with the Gators, a first-year coach watched his team take a
loss while a key player went down with an injury. Frost's Huskers fell at
home to Colorado 33-28 in their 2018 opener this past Saturday (a date with
Akron that had been scheduled for Week 1 was postponed). Fortunately for
Nebraska, quarterback Adrian Martinez escaped a serious leg injury and
reportedly has a chance to play this weekend against Troy. Martinez left
after accounting for three total touchdowns, and the Buffaloes capitalized
by outscoring Nebraska 16-7 in the second half-including 6-0 in the fourth
quarter. The Huskers are -12 home favorites over Troy on Saturday.
Chicago Cubs
. The Cubs have had ample opportunity to put the rest of the competition
away in the National League Central, but so far that has not happened. A
three-game losing streak combined with the Milwaukee Brewers' four-game
surge to the good has Chicago leading the division by just a single game.
The 2016 World Series champions dropped two of two at the Washington
Nationals this past weekend before their chance to make amends on Sunday
got washed out by rain. They are now facing none other than Milwaukee this
week, and the series started on another bad note for the Cubs, who dropped
the opener 3-2 at home on Monday. Chicago is a +265 co-favorite along with
the Dodgers to win the National League Pennant.
Washington Mystics
. The Mystics find themselves trailing the Seattle Storm 2-0 following two
games of the WNBA Finals. Washington went down 89-76 last Friday before
falling 75-73 two days later. The visitors had their chances in Game 2,
especially when they trailed by just one point with 16 seconds left after
Storm star and league MVP Brenna Stewart bricked two free-throws. On
Washington's ensuing possession, Kristi Toliver drove the line before
losing control of the ball and turning it over. The Mystics never got
another good look after Seattle tacked on one free-throw in the closing
seconds. "I got fouled going baseline," Toliver said. "I think it was
pretty blatant; pretty obvious." Washington is a -3 home favorite in Game 3
on Wednesday.
Serena Williams
. Well, that is not how the script had Serena's first U.S. Open since 2016
coming to an end. In an incredibly controversial final on Saturday evening,
the 23-time Grand Slam champion was upset by Naomi Osaka 6-2, 6-4. But the
big story was Serena's second-set mental meltdown. The 36-year-old received
an initial violation (warning) for getting advice from her coaching box,
she got a second violation (point penalty) for destroying a racket, and she
was hit with a third violation (game penalty) from chair umpire Carlos
Ramos for verbal abuse. That gave Osaka a free game for 5-3 when the
20-year-old otherwise would have been serving at 4-3. Serena eventually
held her own serve at 5-3, but Osaka wasted no time clinching the title on
game later. The former world No. 1 is a +450 favorite to win next season's
Australian Open.
