Sports Betting Futures Odds: Four Months Until March, No Days Until College Basketball
March is four months away. That is not a long time, but if it seems like it
is…well…this week's slate of college basketball action will whet the
appetite of hungry fans. The season begins on Tuesday, and it begins with a
bang. Meanwhile, the country club sports (tennis and golf) are close to
wrapping up their 2018 calendar years.

To Make the Final Four
Gonzaga (+175)
- The Zags have never missed the NCAA Tournament in 19 years under head
coach Mark Few. They finally got over the hump to reach their first and
only Final Four in 2016-17 (lost to UNC in the title game). Basically,
everyone is back from last season's Sweet 16 team, but Killian Tillie is
out for eight weeks.
Nevada (+300)
- Nevada is ranked in the preseason Top 10. And why not? The Wolf Pack have
appeared in the Big Dance on back-to-back occasions, including a run to the
Sweet 16 this past season (lost to upstart Loyola-Chicago 69-68). Leading
scorers Caleb and Cody Martin plus Jordan Caroline are back for their
senior years.
North Carolina (+400)
- Can the Tar Heels bounce back from a mediocre 11-7 ACC record and
second-round exit from the NCAA Tournament and recapture the glory days of
back-to-back National Championship appearances (including a title in
2016-17)? Luke Maye returns for his senior season to join a couple of
heralded freshmen.
Michigan (+700)
- The Wolverines have advanced to the Final Four twice in the last six
seasons (including in 2017-18), finishing runner-up on both occasions. Big
man Mo Wagner is gone, but guard Charles Matthews returns as a sophomore
and freshman forward Brandon Johns could make an instant impact.
NFL Coach of the Year
Andy Reid, Chiefs (+125)
- The Chiefs were expected to be good, but at 8-1 they are even better than
advertised. Of course, a lot of that has to do with quarterback Patrick
Mahomes. But Reid has this team playing well on both sides of the ball, and
it boasts the NFL's best point differential at plus-101.
Sean McVay, Rams (+250)
- Although the Rams lost at New Orleans in Week 9, their rise continues to
be a steady one under McVay. Following a 4-12 campaign in 2016, the
32-year-old took over from Jeff Fisher in 2017 and led Los Angeles to an
11-5 mark. The team is currently 8-1 this season.
Matt Nagy, Bears (+400)
- Chicago may not be a Super Bowl contender along the lines of the Chiefs,
Rams, Saints, Patriots, and others. But in their first year with Nagy at
the helm, the 5-3 Bears look poised for their first winning season since
2012. Chicago's defense is fifth overall in the NFL and fourth in scoring.
Adam Gase, Dolphins (+400)
- Miami has cooled off since a 3-0 stat to the year, but it is still
sporting a respectable 5-4 record while being in contention for just a
second playoff berth since 2008. In his third season, Gase has this team
afloat even though quarterback Ryan Tannehill has missed four games.
Nitto ATP Finals
Novak Djokovic (-160)
- This 2018 tennis season on the men's tour comes to a close next week in
London, where the top eight players in the world duke it out. The field has
actually expanded to the Top 10, as Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin Del Potro
are injured and have been replaced by Kei Nishikori and John Isner.
Roger Federer (+225)
- The absences of Nadal and Del Poto only make life easier for Djokovic,
who is 22-1 in his last 23 matches and 31-2 in his last 33. Federer,
however, may be able to challenge the world No. 1. The two all-time greats
just faced each other last week in Paris, where Djokovic survived in a
third-set tiebreaker.
Alexander Zverev (+1000)
- Only 21 years old, Zverev is already making his second appearance at the
O2 Arena. He played a trio of three-setters last fall (beat Marin Cilic,
lost to Federer and Jack Sock), barely missing out on a spot in the
semifinals. The fifth-ranked German boasts a stellar 54-18 record for his
2018 campaign.
Marin Cilic (+1200)
- Cilic has done well to qualify for the year-end championship four times
(three prior to this one), but his lifetime record in London is a mere 1-8
and he has never advanced out of round-robin competition. The
seventh-ranked Croat does not have much momentum right now, with a 3-5
record in his last eight matches.
Mayakoba Golf Classic
Rickie Fowler (+800)
- The PGA Tour's fall swing continues this week with a decent field in
Mexico, where Fowler is looking to do one better than his runner-up
performance in 2017. The ninth-ranked American has delivered three straight
top-eight finishes, including a T4 placement last Sunday in Las Vegas with
a final-round 63.
Jordan Spieth (+1200)
- Spieth has slumped to 14th in the world golf rankings, one
spot behind Tiger Woods and five south of Fowler. The 25-year-old American
has not enjoyed a single top-10 showing since the British Open in July, and
that drought continued with a T55 result this past week in Las Vegas.
Tony Finau (+1400)
- Finau was solid-but-unspectacular in Las Vegas, where he carded rounds of
69, 68, 69, and 68 en route to a T36 performance. The 15th
-ranked American posted a trio of top-eight finishes during the 2018 FedEx
Cup Playoffs and was one of the few Team USA members who played well at the
Ryder Cup.
Gary Woodland (+1800)
- Woodland is a veteran of this tournament, with a runner-up finish in 2016
(lost to Pat Perez by two strokes) and a T34 showing last year (he had
three round of 69 or better but was undone by a Friday 73). The 34-year-old
American is coming off back-to-back top-five results last month in Asia.
