Sports Betting Futures Odds: Derby Day Coming Up in Kentucky
It's May, and that means only one thing. No, not playoffs in the NBA and
NHL. It means the Kentucky Derby is here, duh! The Run for the Roses is
this weekend, when a whole host of horses begin their bid for immortality
in the footsteps of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. In other
news, the NFL Draft has come and gone, so it is time to start looking ahead
to what will transpire between the sidelines.

Kentucky Derby
Justify (+280)
- Getting trained by Bob Baffert can't be a bad thing, because Baffert was
in charge of American Pharoah and is a 12-time champion of Triple Crown
races (including four in Kentucky). Justify is 3-0 so far in 2018 and
triumphed at the Santa Anita Derby earlier this spring by three lengths
over Bolt d'Oro.
Mendelssohn (+350)
- A sibling rivalry could be in the cards at Churchill Downs, as both
Justify and Mendelssohn were sired by Scat Daddy-who was the third favorite
at the 2007 Kentucky Derby before getting injured. Trainer Aidan O'Brien is
making a rare appearance in the USA with Mendelssohn, who won the UAE
Derby.
Audible (+380)
- Since placing third at a race in September of 2017, Audible has won his
last four starts-including the prestigious Florida Derby in late March. He
is trained by Todd Pletcher, who won the Kentucky Derby for the second time
in his career last spring (Always Dreaming) and has also won the Belmont
twice.
Magnum Moon (+630)
- Pletcher has Magnum Moon in his stable as well, giving him a formidable
one-two punch. Magnum's pedigree includes 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle
Slew and 1990 Kentucky Derby champion Unbridled. He won the Arkansas Derby
in mid-April. Bolt d'Oro is also a +630 fourth choice.
Super Bowl
New England Patriots (+400)
- As usual, the Patriots are going in as the clear favorites. And why not?
They were favored from start to finish last season before getting upset by
Philadelphia in the Super Bowl. As expected, it sounds like both
quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski are returning.
Philadelphia Eagles (+650)
- The Eagles won it all with a backup quarterback (Nick Foles) and should
have their starter back for at least most of 2018 (Carson Wentz is
recovering from a torn ACL). Philly will also regain the services of
injured offensive tackle Jason Peters and it traded for defensive end
Michael Bennett.
Green Bay Packers (+750)
- Speaking of injuries, the Packers' 2017 campaign was all but wrecked by
another broken collarbone suffered by quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers
will obviously be back, but veteran receiver Jordy Nelson has moved on to
Oakland. Green Bay recently picked CB Jaire Alexander at No. 18 overall.
Pittsburgh Steelers (+800)
- As long as Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger are still around, the Packers
and Steelers are going to be among the favorites. Roethlisberger has led
Pittsburgh to two titles, and another is not out of the question. They
dominated the AFC North again last year with a 13-3 record.
MLS Cup
Atlanta United (+330)
- Could an Atlanta sports team actually win something? The United are
comfortably leading Major League Soccer in goal differential (plus-12)
despite getting humiliated 4-0 by Houston in their season opener. They have
since gone seven straight matches without a loss-including six victories.
New York City FC (+380)
- New York, which drew with Atlanta 2-2 earlier in the year, is atop the
Eastern Conference standings (and the overall league for that matter) with
20 points (6-1-2 record). It bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Portland by
beating Dallas last week. The Blues have reached the conference semis each
of the past two years.
Los Angeles FC (+650)
- The L.A. Galaxy steal the headlines in those parts as the former club of
David Beckham and Landon Donovan, now the current home of Zlatan
Ibrahimovic. But it is in-city rival Los Angeles FC that is making noise on
the pitch. The club is 5-2-0, second in the Western Conference behind
Sporting Kansas City.
Toronto FC (+800)
- What's up with the Reds? After finishing runner-up in 2016 and winning it
all last year, they are 1-4-1 so far this season. Toronto FC has been
focused more on the CONCACAF Champions League (lost to Guadalajara in the
final last week), has played only six MLS matches, and is dealing with
injuries.
Wells Fargo Championship
Rory McIlroy (+800)
- McIlroy is an obvious favorite this week. The Northern Irishman is
playing well (his last two starts include a win at Bay Hill and a T5 at the
Masters) and he is a two-time champion at Quail Hollow (2010 and 2015). He
also placed T4 in 2016 before the event temporarily changed venues in 2017.
Justin Thomas (+1000)
- The reason for last year's change was that Quail Hollow hosted the PGA
Championship three months following the Wells Fargo. Thomas triumphed at
the former, winning his first major title by two strokes. The 25-year-old
American is currently No. 1 on the 2018 PGA Tour money list.
Rickie Fowler (+1000)
- Fowler is coming off another near-miss at a major, having finished second
at the Masters. Speaking of near-misses, he also placed T5 at last summer's
PGA Championship. The 29-year-old American lifted the Wells Fargo trophy in
2012, so it is safe to say that he really likes this course.
Jason Day (+1800)
- Day is making a rare appearance at the Wells Fargo, perhaps inspired by
his T9 finish at Quail Hollowing during the 2017 PGA Championship. The 14 th-ranked Australian was recently T20 at the Masters. Phil
Mickelson and reigning Masters champion Patrick Reed are +2000 fifth
choices.
