Sports Betting Futures Odds: Are You Ready for Some Football?
It is a big time of year for the country club sports, as tennis' final
major is coming up next week and golf's proverbial playoffs are getting
underway on Thursday. But that won't overshadow the beginning of football
season. College football action seriously heats up next week, but a sample
of the wealth to come will whet fans' appetites on Saturday.

College Football Playoff
Alabama (+200)
- As usual, Alabama heads into a college football season as the National
Championship favorite. The Crimson Tide are the defending champions and
they return both of their quarterbacks-Jalen Hurts and championship game
sensation Tua Tagovailoa.
Clemson (+450)
- Clemson got bounced out by 'Bama in last season's College Football
Playoff semifinals. The Tigers, who won it all one year earlier, will
feature Kelly Bryant at quarterback and their defensive line once against
boasts NFL caliber standouts all over the place.
Georgia (+800)
- Georgia's 2017-18 College Football Playoff run could not have been more
dramatic. The Bulldogs edged Oklahoma in an overtime thriller in the Rose
Bowl before having their hearts broken by Alabama in the title game-also in
OT. Jake Fromm is back under center.
Ohio State (+850)
- Uncertainty surrounds the Ohio State program with Urban Meyer's status as
head coach up in the air. Still, there is no denying the Buckeyes' talent.
That includes DE Nick Bosa, QB Dwayne Haskins, and RB J.K. Dobbins.
Washington is a +1500 fifth choice.
NFL MVP
Aaron Rodgers (+500)
- Rodgers is a two-time MVP but has not won the award since 2014. The key
for him-just as it is for anyone, really-is staying healthy. The
34-year-old has played full 16-game slates just three times in the last
five seasons. Jordy Nelson is off to Oakland, but Rodgers still has Davante
Adams and Randall Cobb on board.
Tom Brady (+750)
- Twice is nice, but Brady has done one better than Rodgers by earning MVP
honors on three occasions-including in 2017 at 40 years old. He passed for
4,577 yards and threw 32 touchdowns compared to only eight interceptions.
Brady has not been picked off more than nine times in a season since 2013
(11).
Carson Wentz (+750)
- Wentz's Eagles took down Brady in Super Bowl LII, but that was with Nick
Foles at the helm because Wentz was out with a torn ACL. Although it
remains to be seen if the North Dakota State product will be ready for Week
1, progress reports are favorable. Wentz had 33 TDs and seven INTs in 13
games last season.
Deshaun Watson (+1500)
- Watson was taking the NFL by storm as a rookie before a dreaded ACL tear
shelved him after seven games. The former Clemson star passed for more than
300 yards twice-including a 402-yard performance in his last game, a 41-38
loss at Seattle. Watson accounted for 21 total touchdowns (19 passing, two
rushing).
U.S. Open (men's)
Novak Djokovic (+250)
- Djokovic missed the second half of 2017 with an elbow injury and he was a
shadow of his former self through the first five months of this season.
Suddenly, though, the Djokovic of old has returned. The Serb won his fourth
Wimbledon title and established himself as the U.S. Open favorite by
triumphing in Cincinnati.
Roger Federer (+375)
- Last Sunday's final on the hard courts of Cincinnati saw Djokovic defeat
Federer in straight sets. Still, the Swiss is in fine form at 37 years
old-way ahead of everyone else in the rankings other than world No. 1
Rafael Nadal. Federer is 82-12 lifetime at the U.S. Open with five titles
(none since 2008).
Rafael Nadal (+375)
- Once thought to be a clay-court specialist, Nadal has won the U.S. Open
three times (including last summer). For what it's worth, he has also
triumphed once on the hard courts of the Australian Open and twice on the
grass of Wimbledon. The top-seeded Spaniard is coming off a big title in
Toronto.
Alexander Zverev (+800)
- Grand Slam success is the only thing that has eluded Zverev in the early
stages of his career. The 21-year-old German, who is already up to fourth
in the rankings, has never advanced to the semis of a major and he is a
mere 2-3 lifetime in New York. Andy Murray and Juan Martin Del Potro are
+1200 fifth choices.
The Northern Trust
Dustin Johnson (+900)
- Johnson underwhelmed at the PGA Championship with a T27 performance, but
he has still finished in the top three in four of his last six
tournaments-including two wins. The world No. 1 should also like his
chances as the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin because
he is the defending champion of this event
.
Justin Thomas (+1200)
- While Johnson is seeking his third victory at The Northern Trust, Thomas
is looking for his first. The world No. 3 has delivered two straight top-10
finishes at this tournament and he is playing better than ever right now.
Thomas won the Bridgestone Invitational earlier this month and placed T6 at
the PGA Championship.
Brooks Koepka (+1400)
- Amazingly, Koepka won two majors in 2018 and he has won three of his last
six major starts dating back to last year's U.S. Open. The reigning U.S.
Open and PGA Championship winner is up to second in the world rankings and
looking like the tour's best player. He should make noise at The Northern
Trust for the first time.
Jason Day (+1400)
- Day triumphed at this tournament in 2015 with a record-tying score of 261
(19-under par). The 10th-ranked Australian played well the last
two years, as well, placing T4 in 2016 and T6 in 2017. He has displayed
consistency of late, with four top-20 finishes in his last four
tournaments. Tiger Woods is a +1500 fifth choice.
