This Week in Sports Betting A-Z
A. Allen, Josh
. With at least a day to explain himself prior to the NFL Draft (compared
to Laremy Tunsil not even having a few hours to explain his 2016 bong
photo), Allen did just that. But he may have to do even more damage control
for his old Twitter habits after getting picked by the Bills. Giants'
safety Landon Collins said that if they were teammates, "He would have to
explain himself as to why he did that. Because at the end of the day,
people are going to continue looking at you sideways or turn their
shoulder." Buffalo is +750 at MyBookie.ag to
sign Dez Bryant.
B. Ball brothers
. The Lithuania show is finally (mercifully?) over. And, to the surprise of
no one, it ended with LaVar Ball on terrible terms with his son's coaches.
Perhaps he should be appreciative of LiAngelo getting a chance to play,
because that's likely not what he'll get in the NBA….
C. Champions League
. Real Madrid drew with Bayern Munich 2-2 in the second leg of their
Champions League semifinal on Tuesday, allowing Ronaldo and company to
advance 4-3 on aggregate. The Whites can become the first club in history
to win the title three straight years. Real is a -140 favorite at BookMaker to do it.
D. Debut
. Pittsburgh's Nick Kingham became the second pitcher in the last 100
years-joining Johnny Cueto (2008)-with one hit allowed, no walks, and nine
strikeouts in his MLB debut. The 26-year-old befuddled the Cardinals
through seven innings this past Sunday as the Pirates cruised to a 5-0
victory.
E. Eleven
. No other player in ATP Tour history has won a single tournament 11 times.
Rafael Nadal just did it in back-to-back weeks-first in Monte-Carlo and
then in Barcelona. The top-ranked Spaniard can accomplish the same feat
next Month at Roland Garros. French Open? More like French closed.
F. Fisher, Derek
. The former NBA guard and Knicks' head coach got engaged to Gloria Govan
last week. Yep, that's Matt Barnes' ex-wife. It sounds like things aren't
as heated as they once were between Fisher and Barnes, but it's still fun
to imagine the possibilities of an MMA-style encounter….
G. Game 7
. There weren't a lot of especially competitive first-round playoff series,
but Boston was involved in a Game 7 in both the NBA and NHL. The city won
both of them as the Celtics took care of business at home against Milwaukee
112-96, while the Bruins surged past Toronto 7-4. In other words, the
Patriots are Boston's least clutch team? Welp.
H. Harvey, Matt
. Having been demoted to the bullpen, Harvey appears to be focusing more on
his social life now than his baseball. The Mets' veteran righty was
reportedly partying last Thursday night in L.A., one day before giving up a
solo homer during one inning of relief work at San Diego. When asked if he
was upset about it, general manager Sandy Alderson responded, "Usually I
get upset if a report is unexpected. So, I guess the short answer is no."
Shots fired!
The Mets (deGrom) are -160 home favorites
over Atlanta (Newcomb) on Wednesday, per Bovada Sportsbook.
I.
Ibrahimovic, Zlatan
. Ibrahimovic has been doing plenty of damage in MLS with the L.A. Galaxy,
but the 36-year-old Swede still insists that he will not play in this
summer's World Cup. So…you know…all of the Americans in MLS finally have
something in common with him!
J. Julio Jones
. Jones last week purged his social media accounts of all Falcons-related
posts. The team insisted he was simply getting a clean start on social
media, but just in case Atlanta went out and drafted fellow Alabama
receiver Calvin Ridley. That should keep Julio happy, and a happy Julio is
a happy Atlanta.
K. Kentucky Derby
. Even though Gronkowski-not too much unlike his namesake and minority
owner-is out because of an injury, the show must go on. The first leg of
the Triple Crown will take place this weekend at Churchill Downs.
Justify is a +300 favorite
.
L. LeBron James
. LeBron led Cleveland to another big win on Tuesday, and he didn't even
have to goaltend to do it! His triple-double of 26 points, 13 assists, and
11 rebounds helped the Cavs take a Game 1 thriller 113-112 in Toronto. 5Dimes Sportsbook has
Cleveland as a +6.5 road underdog in Game 2 on Thursday.
M. Maria Sharapova
. Sharapova has not won a match since the second round of the Australian
Open. That includes opening exits in Doha, Indian Wells, and last week in
Stuttgart. Good news for Sharapova: she probably won't make it far enough
at the French Open to face Serena Williams.
N. No. 1 pick
. The fictional Vontae Mack was an even less surprising No. 1 overall pick
by the Browns-and let's be honest, the Mack pick was a stunner. Cleveland
went with Baker Mayfield in the top spot during last week's NFL Draft,
bypassing more pro-style quarterbacks such as Allen, Sam Darnold, and Josh
Rosen.
O. Ohtani, Shohei
. Ohtani was the early-season sensation of Major League Baseball, but
blisters on his pitching hand and a sprained ankle ended all of that in a
hurry. The Japanese star returned on Tuesday after spraining his ankle last
Friday and went 1-for-4 with a double in the Angels' 3-2 victory over
Baltimore.
P. Pittsburgh Steelers
. Leave it to the Steelers-who certainly did not have the No. 1 overall
pick-to upstage AFC North rival Cleveland during the draft festivities. The
highlight of the three days was without question Ryan Shazier walking to
the podium to announce Pittsburgh's second-round selection.
Q. Quail Hollow
. Guess who's back, back again? Tiger's back, back again. Tiger Woods is
taking the course for the first time since the Masters, this time at Quail
Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. for the Wells Fargo Championship. Rory
McIlroy is a +700 favorite at
Bovada Sportsbook
to win this tournament for the third time in his career. Tiger is +2800.
R. Rodrigo Koxa
. According to the World Surf League, Koxa set the world record for biggest
wave ever surfed. The Brazilian successfully caught an 80-footer in
Portugal last November. It's unclear why it took people six months to
figure that out, but here we are.
S. Shutouts
. The Brewers have already been shut out six times this season-including a
laughable five times by the Cubs alone! You can't make this stuff up,
folks. Chicago improved to 7-1 against Milwaukee with a four-game sweep
last week, three of which were shutouts.
GT Bets
has the Cubs at +900 to win the World Series.
T.
Talladega
. Joey Logano held off Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick, and others to take home
the checkered flag from last weekend's NASCAR event in Talladega. Although
it had some drama, it was nothing compared to Ricky Bobby vs. Jean Girard.
U. Utah Jazz
. Highlighted by a triple-double in Game 3, Ricky Rubio helped Utah secure
a minor 5-over-4 upset in the first round against Oklahoma City. However,
Rubio missed most of the Game 6 clincher with a hamstring injury and he
will be sidelined for at least another game of his team's Western
Conference semifinal against Houston. But the Jazz weren't going to beat
the Rockets anyway, so….
Houston is a -11.5 home favorite
in Game 2 on Wednesday, according to MyBookie.ag.
V. Victor Oladipo
. R.I.P. to the mental health of anyone who had the Cavs and gave the
points in Game 7 against Indiana. With the Pacers (+5.5 underdogs) trailing
by seven, Oladipo forked up an otherwise meaningless three-pointer and
drained it to cut the final deficit to four. That reportedly cost Vegas
sportsbooks a cool $3.5 million. Bring down the house!
W. Western Conference playoffs
. The West is supposed to wild in the NBA, but things on the NHL side of
things are also intriguing. Winnipeg lost to Nashville in double-overtime
before erasing a 3-0 deficit and winning Game 3 by a 7-4 margin on Tuesday
for a 2-1 series advantage. Vegas leads the Sharks 2-1 after trading 4-3 OT
victories in Game 2 and Game 3.
San Jose is a -131 home favorite
in Game 4 on Wednesday, as indicated by BookMaker.
X. Xhaka, Granit
. The Arsenal midfielder played some pretty atrocious defense when
Manchester United opened the scoring in its 2-1 English Premier League
victory over the Gunners last Sunday. It was so bad that former EPL star
and now analyst Graeme Souness said, "that is what you see on a park from
under-12s."
Y. Yankees
. WWWWWWWWWLW. Those are New York's results in its last 11 games. The
Yankees are now within two games of Boston-which started 17-3-in the
American League East.
Z. Zurich Classic
. Perhaps a duo of Tiger and Phil Mickelson would inject life into a team
event. But when Billy Horschel and Scott Piercy lift a trophy, it leaves a
little to be desired. Whatever the case, the Zurich Classic came and went
last week while once again using the team format for a second straight
year.
