This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
A. Alabama
. How's this for easy money? One Crimson Tide backer put $1579.65 on the
money line for last week's game against South Alabama. The Tide rolled
56-14, netting the bettor a cool profit of $1.60. Alabama is a -180
favorite at BookMaker to win the
National Championship.
B. Bryant, Kelly
. Bryant is one guy who won't be winning the National
Championship. New starter Trevor Lawrence left Clemson's 27-23 win over
Syracuse this past Saturday due to a neck injury, but Bryant is not
waffling on his decision to transfer after getting benched. He was
officially granted his release on Tuesday and can begin talking to other
schools.
C. C.C. Sabathia
. You've heard of batters taking one for the team, but this time it was
really the pitcher who did just that. Two innings shy of a $500,000 bonus,
Sabathia beaned Tampa Bay's Jesus Sucre's and got ejected from last
Thursday's game. He was retaliating after Rays reliever Andrew Kittredge
threw one behind Austin Romine's head.
The Yankees (Severino) are -180 home favorites
over Oakland (Hendriks) in the AL wild-card game on Wednesday, per Bovada
Sportsbook.
D. deGrom, Jacob
. Think about how bad the rest of the Mets had to be in order to go 77-85
with deGrom on their team. The right-hander can anticipate his first Cy
Young Award after compiling a 1.70 ERA and striking out 269 batters in
217.0 innings.
E. Eric Reid
. The Panthers recently signed Reid to a one-year deal that can be worth up
to $1.9 million. During the 2016 season, Reid had joined Colin Kaepernick
in kneeling while the National Anthem played. Kaepernick, meanwhile,
continues to believe in something even if it means not getting signed by an
NFL team.
F. Frost, Scott
. "We get a game that we can win next week." That's what Nebraska's head
coach said prior to facing Purdue. Ummmm…well…. Technically the Cornhuskers could have won it; but they didn't. Frost's team fell to 0-4 last
weekend with a 42-18 loss to the Boilermakers, who racked up 516 yards of
total offense and benefited from 11 Nebraska penalties for 136 yards. "We
look like one of the most undisciplined teams in the country," Frost
admitted. "And it kills me. I'm tired of coaching an undisciplined team."
YouWager.eu
has the Huskers as +19 underdogs at Wisconsin on Saturday.
G. Goff, Jared
. Not one, not two, not three, not four…. No, Goff threw five
touchdown passes in the Rams' 38-31 victory over Minnesota last Thursday
night. Los Angeles can start the season 5-0 if it wins at Seattle on
Sunday.
H. Hamlin, Denny
. Hamlin was one of four drivers eliminated from NASCAR's playoffs this
past Sunday in Charlotte. Jimmie Johnson, Austin Dillon, and Erik Jones
also failed to advance as their hopes for the season-long championship came
to an end.
I.
Indianapolis Colts
. In the words of Herm Edwards, "You play. To win. The game." Colts head
coach Frank Reich certainly did that, as he could have settled for a tie
against Houston with his team facing 4th-and-4 at its own
43-yard line as 27 seconds remained in overtime. Reich decided to go for
it, Andrew Luck threw an incomplete pass, the Texas got one first down, and
Ka'imi Fairbairn kicked a 38-yard field goal as time expired to give the
visitors a 37-34 victory. Said Reich: "I'll address it now; I'm not playing
to tie. I'll do that 10 times out of 10." The Texans are +750 at
GT Bets
to in the AFC South.
J. Jimmy Butler
. More than a week after making his trade demand, the Timberwolves' guard
has not reported and the team has not dealt him. Head coach Thom Thibodeau
claims that Butler is still recovering from offseason hand surgery. Unless
you're…like, Ninja, you can probably still show up to the workplace even
with an ailing hand.
K. Kyler Murray
. Murray threw for 432 yards and accounted for seven total touchdowns
during the Sooners' 66-33 rout of Baylor last weekend. Oh, yeah; and he
didn't even start due to being late for a meeting.
Oklahoma is a -8 favorite
at Texas on Saturday, according to MyBookie.ag.
L. Lakers
. Is there anything Kyle Kuzma can't do? We may be about to find out. Los
Angeles is trying out the former first-round pick at center during this
preseason. Kuzma is 6'9''.
BetOnline Sportsbook
has the Lakers at +1200 to win the NBA title.
M. Murray, Andy
. Murray has called it a season after losing in last week's Shenzhen Open
quarterfinals. The former world No. 1 played just 12 matches in 2018 after
returning from hip surgery.
N. Nittany Lions
. The only difference is that the rest of the country outside of Ohio is
even more disgusted by the result…. Last year, Penn State squandered leads
of 14-0, 21-3, 28-10, and 38-27 in the fourth quarter on the way to a 39-38
loss at Ohio State. This past Saturday the Nittany Lions led the Buckeyes
26-14 with less than seven minutes left before another collapse led to a
27-26 victory for OSU. "It's not going to happen again," PSU head coach
James Franklin assured.
O. O'Neal, Shareef
. Shaquille O'Neal's son will miss the upcoming season at UCLA due to a
heart ailment that requires surgery. Get well soon, kid.
P. Preseason
. One of the L.A. Kings' best players got injured during the preseason.
We're talking about the preseason, man. Not the regular season,
not the regular season, not the regular season. The preseason.
Dustin Brown (61 points in 2017-18) sustained a broken finger during last
Saturday's game against Anaheim and is out indefinitely. The Kings are
+1400 at XBet.ag
to win the Western Conference.
Q. Quarterback debuts . Since the Browns returned to the NFL in 1999, none of their quarterbacks have won their first career start. That's 0-15 for those counting following Cleveland's overtime setback against Oakland with Baker Mayfield running the show. The Browns are +3 home underdogs against Baltimore on Sunday, as indicated by BookMaker.
R. Ryder Cup
. Team USA's latest trip to Europe was a debacle of disastrous proportions.
The Americans made Francesco Molinaro look like the second coming of Seve
Ballesteros, and that was the least of their problems. Brooks Koepka left a
fan permanently blinded in one eye with an errant tee shot, Koepka and
Dustin Johnson reportedly got into an altercation, and Patrick Reed took
shots at both Jordan Spieth and captain Jim Furyk. Oh, and the United
States got clobbered 17.5-10.5.
S. Snell, Blake
. The two best pitchers in baseball are not a part of the postseason-deGrom
in the NL and Snell in the AL. Tampa Bay's ace wrapped up his 2018 campaign
with a 21-5 record and a 1.89 ERA to go along with 221 strikeouts in 180.2
innings.
T.
Tiger Woods
. What a difference a week makes. After triumphing at the TOUR
Championship, Tiger went 0-4 at the Ryder Cup as Team USA lost for a sixth
straight time in Europe. He is a +750 favorite at MyBookie.ag to win
the Masters next April.
U. United
. Things are going from bad to worse for Manchester United. Man U was
eliminated from the Carabao Cup last week by Derby County on penalty kicks,
lost its English Premier League match 3-1 to lowly West Ham this past
Saturday, and slumped to a 0-0 home draw against Valencia during Champions
League action on Tuesday.
V. Vancouver Canucks
. Can the Canucks be any worse this year than they were in 2017-18? Well,
if the preseason is any indication it's possible. Vancouver (31-40-11 last
season) just went 1-6. The NHL season gets underway on Wednesday, and
the Canucks are +110 home underdogs
against Calgary, per YouWager.eu.
W. Winston, Jameis
. FitzMagic ran out in Tampa Bay, and we know where that magic didn't go:
to Winston. In the first game for which the former No.1 overall pick was
eligible this season, Fitzpatrick got the start last Sunday against Chicago
and went 9-of-18 for 126 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.
Winston entered in the second half with the Buccaneers trailing 38-3, and
he finished 16-of-20 for 145 yards with one TD and two picks on the way to
a 48-10 loss.
X. Xavier Rhodes
. Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer benched Rhodes for one play after the star
cornerback kicked a penalty flag in frustration against the Rams and got
hit with unsportsmanlike conduct. It was one play too many. Goff promptly
burned backup Trae Waynes with a 47-yard touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks. 5Dimes Sportsbook has
Minnesota as a +3 underdog at Philadelphia in Week 5.
Y. Yelich, Christian
. The Brewers' center fielder finished the season with a .326 average, 36
homers, and 110 RBIs after batting .352 in September with 10 dingers. Can
you say MVP?
Bovada Sportsbook
has the Brewers at +800 to win the World Series.
Z. Denotes clinched playoff berth
. The Cardinals never saw the "z" show up by their name in the standings,
as a 1-5 record in their final six games sealed their fate. Instead they
watched two NL Central rivals advance, with Milwaukee winning the division
and the Cubs settling for a wild card. Chicago lost to the Brewers in a
tiebreaker for the Central title and then fell to Colorado in the wild-card
game one day later.
