This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
A. ACL
. The Redskins are bad at things that are in their control, and they are
bad at things that aren't in their control. They suffered another injury
hit when rookie running back and second-round draft pick Derrius Guice
suffered a torn ACL in their first preseason game last Thursday against New
England. The former LSU star will obviously miss the entire season.
B. Baker Mayfield
. As for the No. 1 overall pick's first preseason game, that went much
better. Mayfield completed 11 of 20 passes for 212 yards with two
touchdowns, no interceptions, 13 yards on three keepers, zero crotch grabs,
and zero handshake refusals while leading the Browns to a 20-10 win over
the Giants. He is +650 at MyBookie.ag to win
NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
C. Curry, Stephen
. "If you're not first, you're last." That's what Will Ferrell's character
in Talladega Nights taught us. So, if you're Curry, you really
just tied with everyone other than one person at last week's Web.com Tour
event. The two-time NBA MVP opened with a 1-over 71 at the Ellie Mae
Classic before collapsing with a Friday 86 to miss the cut and finish last
among the 154 competitors.
D. Demetris Robertson
. Robertson was granted a waiver by the NCAA last week that will allow him
to play right away for Georgia. The junior wide receiver transferred from
Cal after suffering a season-ending leg injury two games into the 2017
campaign, but he set freshman receiving records for the Golden Bears in
catches (50) and yards (767).
E. Evan Gattis
. Houston has lost five in a row, including a ridiculous nine straight at
home. Suddenly, Oakland is just one game back in the American League West.
Gattis does not have a hit since Aug. 1, and he is 0-for-19 in his last 19
at-bats.
The Astros (Cole) are -210 favorites over Colorado (Anderson)
on Wednesday, per Bovada Sportsbook.
F. Fleetwood, Tommy
. Fleetwood's British Open winnings were recently wired to the bank account
of a Florida-based golf teacher by the same name. The pro golfer Fleetwood
eventually got his 12th-place winnings, but not before the other
Fleetwood temporarily found a $154,480 credit in his bank statement. This
is the first time I've ever wished my name was Kylie Jenner.
G. Guarantee
. Celtics' guard Jaylen Brown said in an interview last week that his team
will win the Eastern Conference this coming season. "We're getting to the
finals," he assured. "No question about it." That's not exactly a bold call
with LeBron James now in the West. XBet.ag
has Boston as a +450 second choice to win the NBA title.
H. Hernandez, Felix
. King Felix was demoted to the Mariners' bullpen following his most recent
poor start last Tuesday. That's like Chris Pratt being relegated to a movie
extra in the Michelob Ultra commercial.
I.
Irregular heartbeat
. Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen is on the disabled list with an irregular
heartbeat. He expects to return this season but may undergo a heart
procedure prior to the 2019 campaign. L.A.'s bullpen stinks without him, a
big reason why the team has dropped five straight and has plunged to third
place in the National League West. 5Dimes Sportsbook has
Los Angeles (Ryu) as a -177 home favorite over the Giants (Holland) on
Wednesday.
J. Juventus
. Ronaldo did not waste any time scoring a goal for Juventus. The
33-year-old found the back of the net in his new club's recent friendly
against Juventus' under-20 squad.
K. Kelvin Benjamin
. The Benjamin vs. Cam Newton rivalry is alive and well following a
confrontation before last week's Buffalo-Carolina preseason game. It all
started with Benjamin calling out Newton for being unable to throw the ball
the ball in the ocean, because…well…Newton often can't throw the ball in
the ocean.
L. Live
. Isaiah Thomas went live on Instagram last week, and it did not end well.
The 29-year-old got plenty of backlash for calling the city of Cleveland a
"s---h---," after which he deleted the post. Thomas, once with Cavaliers
and now with the Nuggets, backtracked by making subsequent apologies on
Twitter and Instagram. Of course, if that's the worst thing he does on
social media, he's not doing too much wrong. Just ask-for various
reasons-Josh Hader, Draymond Green, Odell Beckham Jr., and plenty of
others.
M. Maryland
. Maryland's football program has endured a tumultuous time ever since
offensive lineman Jordan McNair died in June after showing signs of
heatstroke during a workout in late May. Head coach D.J. Durkin is on paid
administrative leave, and offensive coordinator Matt Canada is interim
coach. The National Championship favorite is Alabama (+225 at
GT Bets
).
N. No. 25
. Bonds had it retired by the Giants this past Saturday. During the
ceremony, Willie Mays said that Bonds "deserves to be in the Hall of Fame."
If it ever happens, he'll certainly have to wait even longer than Terrell
Owens had to wait for his football HOF call.
O. Official
. Carmelo Anthony to Houston became official on Monday. The 34-year-old
signed a one-year, $2.4 million contract while also writing a thank-you
letter to Thunder fans. No word if he wrote a thank-you letter to Hawks
fans.
P. PGA Championship
. You can't make this stuff up, folks: Brooks Koepka has won three of the
last seven majors. And he has won three of his last six major starts, given
that he missed the Masters due to injury earlier this season. Koepka
triumphed at the PGA Championship on Sunday, firing a closing 66 to prevail
by two shots over none other than Tiger Woods. Tiger is +325 at
BetOnline Sportsbook
to win a major in 2019.
Q. Quality start . Nationals' ace Max Scherzer delivered his MLB-leading 22nd quality start of the season this past Sunday against the Cubs, tossing seven innings of shutout baseball. The bullpen held the lead until there were two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, at which point the shutout, the lead, and the entire game evaporated in one swing. Pinch hitter David Bote launched an epic walk-off grand slam to give Chicago a 4-3 win over Washington.
R. Rafael Nadal
. Nadal's hard-court preparation for the U.S. Open started-and ended-with a
title at the Rogers Cup in Toronto last week. Having gotten enough match
practice in prior to the New York City festivities that begin in less than
two weeks, the world No. 1 withdrew from the Western & Southern Open in
Cincinnati. Nadal is +325 at BookMaker to win the
U.S. Open.
S. Simona Halep
. Halep finally got over the Grand Slam hump with a title at this year's
French Open. Is another one forthcoming in Flushing Meadows? The world No.
1 triumphed last week in Montreal, beating defending U.S. Open champion
Sloane Stephens in the final.
T.
Trout, Mike
. Trout, who sustained a wrist injury while making a slide on Aug. 1, is
eligible to come off the disabled list on Thursday. But he is also away
from the club dealing with a personal family matter, so his status for
later this week remains in question.
U. Unai Emery
. Emery's debut as manager of Arsenal did not go as planned last Sunday.
Then again, it was not exactly expected to go well-not with defending
English Premier League champion Manchester City paying a visit to Emirates
Stadium. The Sky Blues cruised 2-0 while putting eight shots on goal to the
Gunners' three.
V. Van Gundy, Stan
. The 58-year-old is unsure of his next move after he failed to land a
head-coaching job for this coming NBA season. "If I could get a job, I had
planned to coach. Now, I really don't know. I'm really lost right now. I
don't have an idea. My wife wants me to retire." Let's see: playing golf as
a retiree every day, or coaching-for example-the Atlanta Hawks? Suddenly
retirement sounds a lot better for SVG.
W. Woods, Tiger
. Tiger was good enough to beat everyone at last week's PGA Championship
except Koepka. The 14-time major champion went 66-64 on the weekend to
finish in solo second. He's back!
X. Denotes clinched playoff berth
. An "x" shows up seven times in the WNBA standings, while "e" appears
three times. That means two of the league's 12 teams are battling for the
final playoff spot-the Dallas Wings and Las Vegas Aces. Dallas has lost a
ridiculous nine games in a row, leaving Las Vegas just a half-game back.
The Aces are -10.5 home favorites
over New York on Wednesday, according to MyBookie.ag.
Y. Yedlin, DeAndre
. The USMNT and Newcastle defender suffered a knee injury in last weekend's
English Premier League season opener against Tottenham. The severity is not
yet known, but some Yahoo! writer refused to post the GIF on Twitter
because he felt it was too nasty-instead making you go read his story if
you wanted to see the GIF. Of course, that says a lot more about the writer
than it does the nastiness of the injury.
Z. Zimmer, Mike
. The Vikings' head coach banned Stefon Diggs and Xavier Rhodes from
practice last Wednesday, one day after they got into a heated exchange when
Diggs burned Rhodes for a touchdown catch from Kirk Cousins. "They did not
make me happy," Zimmer explained. Minnesota is a +125 favorite at
Bovada Sportsbook
to win the NFC North.
