Case of the Mondays: No Comeback This Time; Patriots Lose to Eagles
There will be no sixth Super Bowl victory for Tom Brady and Bill
Belichick-at least not this year. In an absolute shootout from start to
finish on Sunday night in Minnesota, the Philadelphia Eagles outlasted the
New England Patriots 41-33. With that, a thrilling football season on both
the college and NFL gridiron has come to an end.

New England Patriots
. That was just the kind of game the Patriots always win. They trailed the
entire way before taking a 33-32 lead in the fourth quarter. Even after the
Eagles went back in front, New England still got the ball back with more
than two minutes left needing only a touchdown and extra point to win. But
Brandon Graham came up with a strip of Brady (for the only sack of the
game) and the Patriots' latest comeback effort fell short. New England is a
+500 favorite to win Super Bowl LIII.

Trae Young
. Young has not been off the mark much this season, but saying he was "off
the mark" this past Saturday would be putting it generously. Oklahoma's
freshman sensation went 2-for-14 from three-point range during a 79-74 loss
at Texas. Young finished with19 points on a 7-for-22 shooting performance
overall to go along with 14 assists, five rebounds, two steals, and five
turnovers. The Norman, Okla. native has now turned the ball over at least
five times in seven consecutive outings and has coughed it up at least four
times in 14 straight contests. By comparison, he committed fewer than four
turnovers in four of the first eight games of this 2017-18 campaign. The
Sooners are 2-4 in their last six, with additional losses to Kansas State,
Oklahoma State, and Alabama. The Sooners are -2 home favorites over West
Virginia on Monday.
Cleveland Cavaliers
. Cleveland forward Kevin Love suffered a broken left hand last Tuesday-the
third broken hand of his career. "It just seems like shit luck, really,"
Love lamented. "I don't know how to categorize it; I really don't. When I
looked at (team trainer) Steve Spiro kind of walking off the court (and) I
just said, 'I know this feeling.' This sucks; I can't believe it. Two years
in a row…. Like I said it's one of those shit-luck kind of things." Adding
insult to literal injury, the Cavaliers are 6-12 in their last 18 outings
starting with a Christmas Day loss to Golden State. They are just 31-20
overall and in third place in the Eastern Conference-7.5 games behind
Boston and 5.5 games south of Toronto. Cleveland is a +100 favorite to win
the East.
Philadelphia Flyers
. It's certainly not a bad time to be in Philadelphia. But it is a bad time
to be the Philadelphia Flyers, as no NHL team is the midst of a longer
current losing streak. The Flyers have dropped four in a row at the hands
of Tampa Bay, Washington, New Jersey, Ottawa-only taking one point in a 4-3
shootout loss to the Senators this past Saturday. Since scoring at least
four goals in four straight games, Philadelphia has struggled through nine
consecutive contests (dating back to Jan. 16) in which it has lit the lamp
no more than three times. The Flyers are tied with the Islanders for the
eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They are +1100 to
win the conference.
Chief Wahoo
. The Indians have announced that their Chief Wahoo logo will removed from
uniforms beginning with the 2019 season. Owner Paul Dolan and Major League
Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred came to a mutual agreement in late
January regarding the controversial symbol. "The club ultimately agreed
with my position that the logo is no longer appropriate for on-field use in
Major League Baseball," Manfred commented. "I appreciate Mr. Dolan's
acknowledgement that removing it from the on-field uniform by the start of
the 2019 season is the right course." Soon-to-be Hall of Famer Jim Thome,
who is set for induction this summer, also said last weekend that he does
not want the Chief Wahoo logo on his Cooperstown plaque. The Indians are
+650 to win the World Series; the Dodgers and Yankees are +400
co-favorites.
Ollie Schniederjans
. Schniederjans went into the water on the 17th hole during
first-round action at the Waste Management Phoenix Open last week. A lot of
golfers, it should be said, went into the water in Phoenix. But
Schniederjans did not just go into the water. He putted his ball
into the water. The 24-year-old American drove the green on the par 4
before putting his 75-foot eagle attempt way past the hole and into the
hazard. He made a bogey 5 and eventually finished tied for third-three
shots off the pace. For those counting, yes, that means he would have been
part of the playoff between champion Gary Woodland and runner-up Chez
Reavie if he had sunk his eagle putt (however unlikely) on Thursday.
Third-round leader Rickie Fowler is +300 to win a major in 2018.
Real Madrid
. Real manager Zinedine Zidane insists the race in La Liga is not over,
but…that is contrary to what reality indicates. Barcelona boasts a 12-point
advantage over Atletico Madrid and it is leading fourth-place Real by 19
points. Cristiano Ronaldo and company are just 11-7-4 in Spain's top league
following a 2-2 draw against lowly Levante on Saturday. The Whites led 2-1
before allowing an equalizing goal in the 89th minute. "This
year is being difficult for us," Zidane admitted. "We cannot put three or
four results together. We were in control of the game (on Saturday), above
all the first half, so I am not happy…. We were not focused, and that is
hard to take as it is two points lost. It is a bit difficult to take." Real
Madrid is +650 to win the Champions League; Manchester City is a +250
favorite.
