Case of the Mondays: Jets Become Expansion Knights' Latest Victim
Not even the previously red-hot Winnipeg Jets could avoid a season-ending
fate at the hands of the expansion Vegas Golden Knights. Is Vegas in line
for a finals showdown against the Tampa Bay Lightning, or will the
Washington Capitals avoid another playoff meltdown? On the hardwood,
meanwhile, a back-and-forth Western Conference Finals has taken another
turn for the worse for the Houston Rockets.

Winnipeg Jets
. The Golden Knights are in their first season in the NHL. They are also in
the Stanley Cup Finals. You can't make this stuff up, folks. The Jets
opened the series with a 4-2 win in front of their home fans, but it all
fell apart for them thereafter-dropping Game 2 in Winnipeg, losing both
road games in Vegas, and getting eliminated at home with Sunday's 2-1 loss.
Over the last four contests in the series, the Jets scored a grand total of
six goals. The Golden Knights are +105 to win the Stanley Cup.
Washington Capitals
. In their 43rd season, the Capitals are still seeking their
first Stanley Cup. Recent history has been especially disastrous in terms
of playoff collapses, to the extent that even a 2-0 lead over the Tampa Bay
Lightning-and going back to Washington-did not feel safe. Sure enough, the
Caps lost Game 3 and Game 4 at home and then fell at Tampa Bay 3-2 this
past Saturday. After scoring 10 goals in the first two contests, they have
lit the lamp six times in the last three. The Capitals are -125 home
favorites in Game 6 on Monday.
Houston Rockets
. Losing to the Golden State Warriors-especially when you're on the road-is
not exactly shameful. But the Rockets didn't just lose in Game 3 on Sunday.
They got blown out by 41 points (125-94). Especially bad news for Houston
is that Stephen Curry is back, as the former Davidson star erupted
following two lackluster performances to score 35 points on 13-for-23
shooting (5-for-12 from three-point range). James Harden scored a modest 20
points, and the visitors committed 19 turnovers to Golden State's eight.
The Rockets are +8.5 road underdogs
in Game 4 on Tuesday, and they are +550 to win the series.
Brad Ziegler
. On Sunday afternoon, the Miami Marlins led the Atlanta Braves 6-0 after
four innings, 8-2 midway through the seventh, and 9-4 going into the bottom
of the ninth. The Fish still couldn't win. Atlanta treated its home crowd
to six runs in the ninth, including five with two outs. Ziegler, Miami's
closer who has eight saves this season, got two outs before leaving with a
line of four runs allowed on three hits and one walk. Tayron Guerrero came
in and finished what Ziegler started, giving up the final two runs on two
hits and two walks. Dansby Swanson's walk-off, two-run single completed the
Braves' incredible comeback for a 10-9 victory. The Marlins (Hernandez) are
+112 underdogs at the Mets (Vargas) on Monday night.
Jason Garrett
. The NFL Draft has come and gone; organized team activities have not yet
begun. This is supposed to be a relatively stress-free time of year for NFL
head coaches. That certainly wasn't the case for Garrett this past week.
First, former receiver Terrell Owens sounded off by expressing disbelief
that Garrett is still head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. "When you really
look at it, it doesn't make sense for Jason Garrett to continue to have his
job," Owens said in a recent radio interview. They are not really expanding
or progressing even as a team under his coaching tenure there…. For me,
it's mind-boggling…. I just don't understand why this guy still has a job."
Meanwhile, current receiver Terrance Williams was arrested over the weekend
for public intoxication after crashing his Lamborghini into a light pole
near the Cowboys' practice facility. Dallas' "over/under" regular-season
win total is 8.5
Alexander Zverev
. With his Rome title defense on the line, Zverev came close to picking up
a famous clay-court win at the Foro Italico on Sunday. After getting
destroyed by Rafael Nadal 6-1 in the first set of their final, the
21-year-old German roared back to take the second by the same score and
also surged to a 3-1 lead in the decisive third. But with Zverev up a break
at 3-2, a one-hour rain delay interrupted the match and completely halted
the underdog's momentum. When the two competitors came back out, Zverev did
not win another game. Nadal took the next four-ending with five in a row
including his service hold prior to the interruption-en route to a 6-1,
1-6, 6-3 victory. It was the Spaniard's eighth triumph in Rome and he will
soon seek title No. 11 at the French Open when the season's second major
begins next week. The King of Clay is a -225 favorite to triumph for an 11 th time at Roland Garros.
Marc Leishman
. Leishman and Aaron Wise went into the final round of the AT&T Byron
Nelson in a virtual match-play situation, leading all other competitors by
at least four shots. Wise seized a two-stroke lead over the Australian
through four holes on Sunday and put the clamps down quickly with a 5-under
31 on the front nine. The 21-year-old American also birdied the 10 th, coasting to victory the rest of the way with eight
consecutive pars. Leishman at least managed to finish solo second, three
shots behind Wise and one clear of a three-way tie for third place. The
34-year-old, who opened with an incredible 61 to take early control of the
tournament, was seeking his first win of the season. Instead, Wise bagged
the first win of his career. Leishman is +5000 to win next month's U.S.
Open; Jordan Spieth is a +900 favorite.
