Betting on 2018 World Cup Soccer: Why You Should Do It
Talk of "Russia" has dominated the American news cycle over the past two years for all the wrong reasons.
But for one month this summer, the news coming from Mother Russia will be for the right reasons.
Russia is hosting the 2018 World Cup. The World Cup is the largest sporting event on the planet and is the biggest betting adventure on the sports calendar this summer.
The 2018 World Cup kicks off at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 14 when the host nation takes on Saudi Arabia in Luzhniki Stadium at Moscow. The tournament will end when a champion is crowned in the same venue on Sunday, July 15.
For those unfamiliar with the World Cup structure, the World Cup features 32 teams broken into eight four-team groups, A through H. Each team will play a round robin against the other teams in the group, receiving three points for a win and one point for a tie.
At the end of three matches, the two teams with the most points qualify to advance to the Round of 16, or Knockout Stage. There are a series of tiebreakers to determine positioning if teams finish the group stage with equal points.
The Knockout Stage is a 16-team mini-tournament comprised of eight group winners and eight second-place finishers. Those teams play elimination soccer - with penalty kicks concluding any game that is tied after regulation and extra time - until a champion is crowned in Moscow on July 15.
Germany is the defending champion, having won the last World Cup in Brazil in 2014. At +450 the Germans are one of the favorites to hoist the trophy in Russia. Brazil (+425), Spain (+600), France (+650) and Argentina (+950) are considered the other favorites.
Unfortunately, the United States did not qualify for this World Cup, which will dull some of the excitement for the event here in America.
However, there are still a lot of reasons why you should be excited about this year's World Cup.
First, the gambling and profit potential is significant. There are 64 games played in a month - think NCAA Tournament - and a variety of different betting options. There is three-way soccer betting, straight up betting, totals, and all manner of futures and props. There is a load of value in these numbers.
Second, as I mentioned, this is literally the biggest sporting event in the world. The emotion surrounding these matches is off the charts. The passion and interest in this event is unlike anything else. And if you love sports, or betting, it shouldn't be hard to get excited about it.
Finally, soccer is fun as hell. Even if you don't like the sport, you should enjoy making money on it. And, frankly, with the World Cup starting right as the NBA and NHL seasons are wrapping up, it is hitting the scene at just the right time. I love MLB betting. But there's no doubt that it can turn into a grind during the dog days of summer.
The World Cup, however, is a breath of fresh air. The games are on early in the morning on the East Coast. There is nothing like the excitement of cashing tickets and watching high-level sports featuring some of the best players in the world while frying your bacon and pouring your second cup of coffee.
Several Doc's Sports handicappers - Doc's Sports, Robert Ferringo , Raphael Esparza , Strike Point Sports , and Indian Cowboy - will be releasing selections on these matches in June and July.
