Basic Strategy Teasers: Best Week 10 NFL Betting Options
After five straight Thursday Night Football duds, the NFL schedule finally gave us two teams worth watching - the Carolina Panthers vs the Pittsburgh Steelers. The spread favored the Steelers, and the total was set at 52. What we got was an absolute butt-whopping from a Steelers team that finally looks the part of Super Bowl contenders. Nobody in their right mind would have anticipated the Panthers getting beat as bad as they did, but they looked awful. After the second Panthers series of the game, you could instantly tell it was going to be a long night for Cam Newton and his offensive line. The Steelers were getting to Newton with ease, forcing errant throws and just bad decision-making.
It was a game that could have saved Thursday Night Football, but it failed to live up to the competitive hype. However, Ben Roethlisberger did have a perfect passer rating, tossing for 328 yards and five touchdowns, helping fantasy teams and over bettors across the country. But I digress.
As for last week's Basic Strategy Teaser, we made it three straight wins thanks to both the Falcons and Steelers winning outright. We are now 6-3 through nine weeks of action.
Remember, a Basic Strategy Teaser is a two-team wagering options that allows you to adjust the spread six, six-and-a-half or seven points to get a favorable spread. At Doc's Sports, we only recommend using six-point teasers and moving spreads through key numbers such as three and seven. The first part of this two-team, six-point teaser will rely on the Jacksonville Jaguars to return to playing competently on both sides of the football. The Jags started the season so well, going 3-1 before having the wheels fall off during their recent four-game losing streak. The Jaguars defense, which was once the talk of the NFL, had allowed more than 20 points in all four games, including 24 to the Eagles, 20 to the Texans, 30 to the Chiefs and 40 to the Cowboys. Aside from the Chiefs game, that's a lot of points to give up to teams that aren't exactly offensive juggernauts. However, in this spot, the Jaguars are well rested and coming off their bye and have had two weeks to prepare for an Indianapolis team that is balanced on offense but can't stop anybody on defense.
The Jaguars are likely to get Leonard Fournette back for this matchup, and his presence should boost the morale and level of competitiveness throughout the roster. Fournette is a big and powerful back that is capable of leading a team to victory, and he should have no problem producing against a Colts defense that is giving up 110 rushing yards per game. His presence alone will take the pressure off of Blake Bortles, and we know when Bortles plays best - and that's when he's not the focal point of the offense. Once again, I must reiterate, the Colts defense is not good. They rank in the bottom third of the league in all major defensive categories, and if Jacksonville can score points like I believe they can, they will not lose this game by more than eight points.
Some would argue that the Colts are finally turning it around and that they have a good balance on offense, with a healthy Andrew Luck leading the way, but have not played a good defense in a month, and they've beaten the Bills and Raiders. Let's not go anointing them as "being back" yet. The Jags will provide a stern challenge and have dominated the season series of late. If the Colts do prevail, it will be by no more than a field goal.
The second leg of this six-point, two-team teaser will rely on the Philadelphia Eagles to get the job done and beat the Dallas Cowboys. At some shops, you can find lines of 7.5, while some have just straight sevens. Either one is fine with me, but typically a teaser works best when it's teased down through both key numbers of seven and three.
The Eagles are rested after winning in London and then taking their bye. They got stronger at the trade deadline by acquiring Golden Tate to help out a struggling receiving corps. Now they get return home to take on a Dallas team that was embarrassed on Monday night and looks putrid on offense despite the addition of Amari Cooper. The Eagles have not won at home since Week 3 of the regular season. That was Sept. 23. You don't think they are chomping at the bit to be back in front of their home fans and put on a show? It's always a tough ask to lay a touchdown or more in a division game, but the Eagles are clearly the better team and in the better spot this week. Teasing them down and getting them at under a field goal is like taking candy from a baby. Look for Carson Wentz to have a big day pushing the ball down field against a depleted Dallas secondary, and look for the Eagles D to turn up the pressure and force the anemic Cowboys offense into mistakes and turnovers.
