By finishing 8-7-1 last year, Washington finished above .500 in back-to-back seasons for the first time in 20 years. In 1996-97 they went 9-7 and then 8-7-1, the same records that they posted nearly two decades later. The Redskins haven't posted three straight winning years since the end of the Joe Gibbs era in 1992, and the last time they won two straight years they followed up with a 6-10 stinker.

Washington has seemingly done everything it can this offseason to screw up a pretty good thing. They have alienated quarterback Kirk Cousins by not signing him to a long-term deal. There was the weird firing of general manager Scot McCloughan. They gutted their receiving corps. And finally there was the overhaul of their offensive and defensive coaching staffs thanks to the defection of OC Sean McVay and DC Joe Barry to the Rams.

The Redskins are not bereft of talent. Cousins has more than proved himself as a legit signal caller. Jordan Reed is a game changer (when he's healthy) and Terrelle Pryor is an athletic freak. Washington's offensive line is underrated as well. Defensively, they reshuffled their front four and added savage hitters Zach Brown and D.J. Swearinger to the back seven.

In all, there aren't a lot of soft spots on the Washington roster. However, the ones they do have could cause plenty of problems. The receiving corps stinks beyond Pryor and up-and-comer Jamison Crowder. And the running back situation is sketchy at best. Washington's front four is not better, and there is minimal depth on the defensive side of the ball.

There is simply nothing outstanding about this Redskins team. They are good. But that's it. Cousins will try to carry this offense again after it finished No. 3 in total yards last season. They have finished in the bottom five in total defense each of the past two seasons (and three times in the last five years). And I don't think the Redskins have enough top-end talent to counter what the rest of the division is packing.

I don't know that Washington got any better after just missing the playoffs last season. I also think that they have some negative karma after their messy offseason. And despite a favorable early-season schedule I think that the Skins are going to hit the skids in the second half of the year and end up 'under' this mark.
