A. Adele
. At the Grammys this past Sunday, Adele started her tribute to George
Michael off key and promptly restarted. Suddenly the Warriors, Indians, and
Falcons are like, "Can we get a do-over?!?!"
B. Brandon Phillips
. Phillips rejected a trade to the Braves earlier in the offseason but
agreed to one last weekend. Since the end of the 2016 campaign, Atlanta has
acquired the 35-year-old Phillips, 42-year-old R.A. Dickey, and 43-year-old
Bartolo Colon. Maybe the Braves are purposely getting guys who would have
put them in the playoffs a decade ago so that they won't actually have to
go this year's playoffs and put the city of Atlanta through more
heartbreak. MyBookie.ag has the
Braves at +4500 to win the National League Pennant.
C. Charles Oakley
. The Knicks may be the best-or worst-reality show on TV at the moment.
Oakley was arrested after last week's kerfuffle at Madison Square Garden
and then banned for life by controversial owner James Dolan. "Life" turned
out to be just a few days, as the ban was lifted following a meeting
between Oakley, Dolan, and NBA commissioner Adam Silver. Oh, and the Knicks
stink.
D. Denver Nuggets
. Not one, not two, not three…not 21, not 22, not 23…. No, the Nuggets sank
an NBA-record 24 three-pointers in their 132-110 upset of Golden State on
Monday. Juancho Hernangomez, who sounds like he should be a conquistador
rather than a sharpshooter, went 6-for-9 from downtown en route to 27
points.
E. Expecting
. Win five World Series titles? Check. Marry Hannah Davis? Check. Have
children with Hannah Davis? Just about check. Derek Jeter is one lucky guy.
His supermodel wife announced earlier this week that they are expecting
their first child.
F. Fab Melo
. The 7-foot-0 center, who starred for Syracuse and also played for the
Celtics, died in his native Brazil last week. He was 26 years old. R.I.P.
G. German National Anthem
. National Anthems have gone wrong before, but perhaps not quite like this.
At last week's Fed Cup match between the United States and Germany in
Hawaii, the United States Tennis Association played the National Anthem
from Nazi era Germany instead of the current German song. Oops.
H. Henrik Lundqvist
. The Rangers' goalie became the fastest to 400 wins when his team took
down Colorado 4-2 this past Sunday. Lundqvist accomplished the feat in 727
career games, breaking the record of 735 required by Martin Brodeur.
The Rangers are -115 favorites
at the Islanders on Thursday, per GT Bets.
I.
Indiana
. The only Hoosiers you'll be seeing in March is if you fire up the classic
1986 film. That is unless Indiana wins the Big Ten Tournament-which does
not seem likely. The Hoosiers are a mere 15-12 overall and in 11 th place in the conference at 5-9 after watching their losing
streak hit four with a 75-74 setback at Minnesota on Wednesday.
J. Jordan Woodard
. Things were already going poorly on the college basketball hardwood for
Oklahoma. The Sooners saw their losing streak his seven games in last
Saturday's 80-64 loss at Iowa State, and adding insult to injury-or vice
versa-Woodard went down with a torn ACL in that contest. Woodard was the
team's leading scorer at 14.6 points per game. OU ended the skid by beating
Texas on Tuesday but it is still a horrendous 9-16 overall and 3-10 in the
Big 12.
K. Kevin Durant
. In his return to Oklahoma City last Saturday, Durant poured in a
game-high 34 points as the Warriors clobbered the Thunder 130-114. He also
got into a nice little shouting match with former OKC sidekick Russell
Westbrook. Watching Durant and Westbrook as All-Star Game teammates this
weekend could be fun! Golden State is -175 at
Bovada Sportsbook
to win the NBA title.
L. Leicester City
. What a difference a year makes. Leicester City won the most stunning
title in English Premier League history last season; now the Foxes are
struggling simply to avoid relegation. They are 5-14-6, leaving them just
one point above the bottom three teams on the table. Leicester has lost
five matches in a row and has gone six consecutive outings without scoring
a single goal.
M. Malkin, Evgeni
. After missing seven games with a lower-body injury, Malkin did not
disappoint in his return to the Penguins. The star center delivered a goal
and an assist as Pittsburgh pounded Vancouver 4-0 on Tuesday. At 35-13-7,
the Pens are second best in the Eastern Conference behind only Washington.
N. Nadal, Toni
. This will be Uncle Toni's last year coaching Rafael Nadal, it was
announced last week. In 12 seasons with Uncle Toni as his primary coach,
Nadal has won 14 Grand Slam titles. The Spaniard is +250 at
BetOnline Sportsbook
to win the French Open.
O. Okafor, Jahlil
. It isn't quite time to file Okafor away as another Duke star turned NBA
bust, but it's close. The 76ers are desperately trying to unload him before
the trade deadline, and he was benched for two recent games in anticipation
of a deal. But nothing has happened, and Okafor played in Wednesday's
116-108 loss to Boston, scoring four points in 17 minutes.
The Celtics are +1 underdogs
at Chicago on Thursday, as indicated by MyBookie.ag.
P. Phog Allen Fieldhouse
. Kansas still hasn't lost back-to-back home games since 1989 and
it still hasn't been swept in the regular season by a Big 12
opponent in 14 years under head coach Bill Self. Those streaks should have come to an end on Monday, but West Virginia blew a
14-point lead with less than three minutes remaining in regulation and lost
to the Jayhawks 84-80 in overtime. Even the Atlanta Falcons were impressed
by the meltdown.
Q. Quentin Moses
. The former University of Georgia and Miami Dolphins linebacker died in a
house fire last weekend. He was 33 years old. R.I.P.
R.Released
. The Giants parted ways with receiver Victor Cruz earlier this week. The
30-year-old caught just 39 passes for 586 yards and one touchdown this past
season. Perhaps he can still be a decent salsa dancer for some team-or do
anything, even quarterback, for the Browns.
The Giants are +2500 to win Super Bowl LII
, according to Bovada Sportsbook.
S. Spieth, Jordan
. Based on results, or lack thereof, it would be fair to say that Spieth
has never recovered from sending two balls into the water on 12 and sending
his chances of a second Masters title into the abyss. But with less than
two months to go before another trip to Augusta National, the 23-year-old
is building confidence. He won last week's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am by
four shots and has turned in five straight top 10 finishes. Spieth is a
+640 favorite atBookMaker to win the Masters.
T.
Twenty
. That's how many winning seasons the Spurs have compiled in a row. They
clinched another winning mark for this 2016-17 campaign by improving to
42-13 with a 110-106 victory at Indiana on Monday. San Antonio won again on
Wednesday, humiliating Orlando 107-79. But the bottom line is the playoffs
need to begin so that teams like San Antonio, Golden State, and Cleveland
will start trying.
GT Bets
has the Spurs at +425 to win the Western Conference.
U. UConn
. Make it an even 100. The Connecticut women extend their winning streak,
which seems like it has spanned something like 15 seasons in a row, to the
century mark when they held off South Carolina 66-55 on Monday.
V. Virginia Tech
. Hokies' sophomore forward Chris Clarke suffered a torn ACL in last
weekend's double-overtime upset of Virginia. Clarke was Tech's leading
rebounder at 7.3 boards per game, and he was also scoring at an 11.4 ppg
clip. Ouch.
W. Winnipeg Jets
. Winnipeg had the longest current losing streak in the NHL (tied with
Detroit at four games), but then Patrik Laine happened. The 18-year-old
phenom picked up his third hat trick of the season with three goals in a
5-2 drubbing of Dallas on Tuesday. Laine has 26 goals and 21 assists
through 51 contests in his rookie season. 5Dimes Sportsbook has
the Jets as +205 underdogs at Pittsburgh on Thursday.
X. Xabi Alonso
. Alonso returned from a knee injury scare earlier this week to play in the
first leg of Bayern Munich's Champions League matchup with Arsenal on
Wednesday. Bayern rolled 5-1 in front of its home fans, and Alonso said
only a "debacle" would prevent the club from reaching the quarterfinals.
That sounds about right.
Y. Yankees
. Alex Rodriguez and Nick Swisher will be at Yankees Spring Training as
guest instructors. A-Rod's best advice to become better at hitting: build
muscle, no matter how.
Z. Zags
. This whole being in the West Coast Conference thing has worked out pretty
well for Gonzaga-unless you're interested in getting some good competition.
The top-ranked Bulldogs are 14-0 in the WCC this season (26-0 overall), and
not even St. Mary's can stay on the court with them. Gonzaga swept the
regular-season series against the Gaels with a 79-56 home blowout on Jan.
14 and a routine 74-64 road victory last Saturday.
The Zags are -21.5 home favorites
over San Francisco on Thursday, per BetOnline Sportsbook.
