Sports Betting Futures Odds: Here Comes Football Season
With October baseball still many weeks away and golf's final major now a
thing of the past, football season is soon to take center stage. It gets
going in earnest with a big Labor Day Weekend featuring Alabama vs. Florida
State and Michigan vs. Florida. NFL action won't be far behind.

NCAAF Labor Day Weekend
Michigan -3 vs. Florida
- The first marquee weekend in college football includes a showdown at
AT&T Stadium in Arlington between Michigan and Florida. Recent
on-the-field struggles are not the only reasons why the Gators are underdogs.
They will be without seven suspended players when they face the Wolverines.
Alabama -7 vs. Florida State
- Alabama's quest for National Championship redemption after losing a
thriller to Clemson in January begins at the new Mercedes-Benz Dome in
Atlanta. This will have serious College Football Playoff implications,
because both teams are in the preseason top five in just about every poll.
UCLA -3 vs. Texas A&M
- One day after Michigan-Florida and Alabama-Florida State, a battle in the
Rose Bowl will pit UCLA against Texas A&M on Sunday, Sept. 3. UCLA and
quarterback Josh Rosen struggled to a 4-8 campaign in 2016 that began with
a 31-24 overtime loss at Texas A&M.
Tennessee -3 vs. Georgia Tech
- The Mercedes-Benz Dome will also be in use for Georgia Tech vs.
Tennessee. A few miles removed from their friendly confines of Bobby Dodd
Stadium, the Yellow Jackets are a slight underdog in this one. Tech has a
relatively young backfield in its triple-option offense.
First NFL head coach to be fired this season
Todd Bowles, Jets (+350)
- Bowles compiled a 10-6 record in his first season with the Jets, but that
was not good enough for a playoff spot. It went downhill from there, as New
York plunged to 5-11 in 2016. The schedule is extremely soft through five
weeks, so Bowles and company better get off to a good start.
Marvin Lewis, Bengals (+600)
- It is nothing short of a miracle that Lewis is still the head coach in
Cincinnati. Fourteen years is a lifetime-or more-in the NFL and it's even
longer when you have never won a single playoff game. A streak of five
winning seasons ended in 2016, so the seat is especially warm.
Chuck Pagano, Colts (+600)
- Pagano could really use a healthy Andrew Luck this year. The head coach's
success is directly tied to the quarterback, and Indianapolis recently
struggled to a pair of mediocre 8-8 campaigns with Luck less than 100
percent. The luster of three consecutive 11-5 seasons is gone.
John Fox, Bears (+750)
- Denver won the AFC West in all four of its years under Fox, but Peyton
Manning and Von Miller ain't walkin' through that door in Chicago. The
Bears went 6-10 in 2015 followed by a disastrous 3-13 effort. And now the
blame can't be placed on quarterback Jay Cutler.
U.S. Open
Garbine Muguruza (+600)
- Muguruza won Wimbledon in July for her second Grand Slam title
(previously triumphed at the 2016 French Open). But the U.S. Open is
traditionally by far her worst major. In fact, in four appearances the
Spaniard has never even advanced past the second round.
Karolina Pliskova (+700)
- The world No. 1 has ascended to the top spot despite having never won a
major. She has, however, reached a final, a semifinal, and a quarterfinal
in three of her last four slams-including a runner-up performance at the
U.S. Open in 2016.
Victoria Azarenka (+700)
- Azarenka missed four straight majors due to pregnancy, but her comeback
is underway after giving birth. It got off to a respectable start on grass,
as the Belarusian reached the fourth round at Wimbledon before losing to
Simona Halep. Azarenka is a two-time U.S. Open runner-up.
Angelique Kerber (+800)
- Kerber had enjoyed a long stay at No. 1 in Serena Williams' absence, but
she is on the way down in 2017. Now third, the German has not yet advanced
past the fourth round in any Grand Slam in 2017. Johanna Konta is also
+800, while Halep and Maria Sharapova are +900.
Wyndham Championship
Henrik Stenson (+1200)
- With most of the top stars resting in between the PGA Championship and
the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Stenson may be the man to beat at this week's
tournament in Greensboro, N.C. The 41-year-old Swede has been in solid
form, with a T11 at the British, a T17 at Bridgestone, and a T13 at the
PGA.
Kevin Kisner (+1600)
- Kisner was the 54-hole leader at Quail Hollow last week but it was his
first time seriously contending at a major and he stumbled to a Sunday 74
(T7, four shots behind champion Justin Thomas). The 33-year-old American,
who was T10 at the Wyndham in 2016, won a title in May at Colonial.
Ryan Moore (+2000)
- Moore won the Wyndham in 2009 and was more recently a solid T10 in 2015,
so he knows what he is doing on this course. The 34-year-old American is
struggling for the most part in 2017, but he has bounced back from three
straight missed cuts with two decent performances-including at T13 at the
PGA.
Webb Simpson (+2200)
- There is a lot to like about Simpson this week. He has made eight
consecutive cuts dating back to mid-May, a stretch that includes two of his
three top 10s in 2017. Additionally, the 32-year-old is a former Wyndham
winner (2011) and placed T6 in 2015. Bill Haas and Bud Cauley are also
+2200 fourth choices.
