March Madness is one of spring's great pastimes, but nothing shouts
springtime quite like Augusta National in April. Now that the college
basketball festivities have come and gone, it is time for the Masters to
take center stage this week. North Carolina earned redemption from its 2016
heartbreak by winning the National Championship on Monday, and now it is
Jordan Spieth's turn for something similar to transpire on the golf course.

The Masters
Dustin Johnson (+600)
- The world No. 1 is No. 1 for a reason. Quite simply, he is by far the
best player in golf right now. Johnson has won twice in a row (at Riviera
and the match-play championship) and has five top-six finishes in his last
six starts. He placed T6 and T4 at the last two Masters.
Jordan Spieth (+800)
-Spieth was dominating last year's tournament, seemingly well on his way to
a second straight green jacket. Then hole 12 happened. Two water-balls all
but ended Spieth's chances. Still, his last three Masters finishes are T2,
win, and T2. Spieth is coming off a missed cut in Houston.
Rory McIlroy (+800)
-The Masters is the only major that has eluded McIlroy. He should have won
it in 2011 but blew a four-stroke lead on Sunday with a final-round 80.
Having never finished in the top 10 before 2014, McIlroy has turned in
three straight top 10s (T8, fourth, and T10).
Rickie Fowler (+1800)
- Fowler has been Mr. Consistent dating back to last fall, something that
has not always been the case. He has been top 16 in seven of his last eight
events, including five top 10s and one win (at the Honda in February).
Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama are also +1800 fourth choices.
National Championship

Duke (+650)
- If there is such a thing as too early, then it's too early to discuss the
2018 National Championship. After all, North Carolina just lifted the 2017
trophy on Monday. But there is no such thing as too early, so here we go.
Duke was the preseason favorite this past season, too, and that did not
work out so well.
Kansas (+650)
- Notorious NCAA Tournament choke artists, the Jayhawks won it all in 2008
but have since reached only one Final Four (finalists in 2012). Player of
the Year Frank Mason III and Josh Jackson will be gone, but Devonte' Graham
should return, and talent has never been an issue for Kansas.
Kentucky (+650)
-In the one-and-done era of college basketball, Kentucky is in the midst of
an endless cycle. A host of star freshmen come in, contend for or win a
title, and then leave for the NBA to open the door for another crop of
freshmen. The 2017-18 campaign will be no different for head coach Joh n Calipari.
Louisville (+650)
-The postseason did not go as planned for head coach Rick Pitino's crew,
which lost its ACC Tournament opener to Duke and its second-round NCAA
Tournament game to Michigan. But a lot of key pieces should be returning
for the Cardinals. North Carolina is a +800 fifth choice.
American League East
Boston Red Sox (-140)
-As usual, the AL East should be one of the most intriguing divisions in
baseball this season. Boston got the job done in 2016, with a 93-69 record
that was four games better than both Baltimore and Toronto. Chris Sale has
joined the rotation, but David Price's elbow issue may be a problem.
Toronto Blue Jays (+350)
- The Blue Jays battled to a wild-card spot and fared better than Boston in
the playoffs. They beat Baltimore in extra innings in the wild-card game
and swept Texas before falling to Cleveland in the ALCS. Starter Marcus
Stroman was recently named MVP of the World Baseball Classic.
New York Yankees (+600)
- The Yankees have missed the playoffs three of the last four seasons and
have not won a postseason game since winning an ALDS series against
Baltimore in 2012. They were mostly an afterthought in 2016, going 84-78 to
finish fourth in the division (nine games behind Boston).
Baltimore Orioles (+900)
-Baltimore has advanced to the playoffs three times in the last five
seasons, including when it captured an AL East title in 2014. The Orioles,
however, failed to take care of business at home in last year's AL
wild-card game against Toronto. Tampa Bay is not too far behind as a +1100
fifth choice.
Champions League
Barcelona (+250)
-The Champions League round of 16 was nothing short of epic, and now
quarterfinal action will begin next week. Barcelona memorably advanced by
erasing a 4-0 deficit after one leg of its battle with Paris Saint-Germain.
Next up for the Spanish club is Juventus.
Bayern Munich (+330)
-The marquee matchup of the quarterfinals pits Bayern Munich against Real
Madrid. Bayern, which last triumphed in 2013 and also has two runner-up
finishes in the last seven years, abused Arsenal by a combined 10-2 score
in a statement-making round of 16 win.
Real Madrid (+550)
-Nobody has won the Champions League more times than Real Madrid, which has
11 titles (including last season). Bayern Munich and Barcelona are tied for
third with five behind AC Milan's seven. Ronaldo and company cruised past
Napoli 6-2 on aggregate in the last round.
Atletico Madrid (+600)
-Still bidding to lift a Champions League trophy for the first time ever,
Atletico lost a heartbreaker to Real on penalty kicks in the 2016 final.
The club has now finished runner-up on three occasions without triumphing.
Atletico posted scores of 4-2 and 0-0 against Bayer in the round of 16.
