Sports Betting Futures Odds: Who is the Class of the NFC?
The Falcons have recovered, for now, from their Super Bowl meltdown to go
2-0 through two games. But they almost lost to lowly Chicago. Both Green
Bay (got blown out last week by Atlanta) and Seattle (lost handily against
Green Bay) have issues, although they are also NFC co-favorites. Dallas got
manhandled by the Broncos in Week 2. So who is the class of the NFC?

NFC Championship
Atlanta Falcons (+450)
- The Bears had first-and-goal at the five-yard line with a chance to beat
Atlanta in Week 1. It has been full steam ahead for the Falcons since they
survived that scare as the defending NFC champions picked up the pace to
hammer Green Bay 34-23 in a game that really wasn't that close.
Green Bay Packers (+450)
- Aaron Rodgers and company would be fine with not having to visit Atlanta
in this year's playoffs-or any time thereafter, for that matter. They lost
to the Falcons in the 2016 regular season, in the NFC Championship, and
again this past Sunday. But an opening win over Seattle was nice.
Seattle Seahawks (+450)
- Seattle could really use Marshawn Lynch in its backfield as opposed to
seeing him dance on the sideline with Oakland. The Seahawks put up only 17
points against Green Bay and went for just 12 last weekend against San
Francisco. They do have one win to show for it, but the offense must get
going.
Dallas Cowboys (+600)
- The Cowboys opened with a routine win over the Giants, although that
looks less than inspiring in the wake of New York's awful Monday night
performance against Detroit. In a 42-17 loss at Denver this past weekend,
running back Ezekiel Elliott gained an anemic eight yards on nine carries.
First SEC Coach Fired
Butch Jones, Tennessee (+150)
- The Volunteers played some inexplicable defense on Florida's final
prayer, which was answered in the form of a 63-yard Hail Mary as time
expired to give the Gators a 23-17 victory last weekend. Tennessee has
never been better than 9-4 in four seasons under Jones.
Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M (+275)
-Texas A&M will have to do more than beat Nicholls and
Louisiana-Lafayette in order to erase the demons of its epic season-opening
collapse against UCLA. This program has stalled out under Sumlin, with
three consecutive 8-5 seasons on the heels of 11-2 and 9-4 campaigns.
Gus Malzahn, Auburn (+600)
-The schedule will soon get tough again as Mississippi State, LSU, Georgia,
and Alabama are still looming. Malzahn and the Tigers failed their first
real test, losing at Clemson 14-6 on Sept. 9. In three years since losing
in the National Championship, Auburn has not been better than 8-5.
Ed Orgeron, LSU (+700)
- Orgeron got the LSU job with significant backing from the players after
Les Miles was fired in the middle of last season. Well, the honeymoon is
already almost over. The Tigers got blown out 37-7 at Mississippi State in
their SEC opener last Saturday. Barry Odom of Missouri is also a +700
fourth choice.
English Premier League
Manchester City (+100)
- The usual suspects are atop the Premier League
standings through five matches, with Manchester City and Manchester United
leading the way at 13 points. City has won its last two matches by a
combined 11-0, an impressive stretch that includes a 5-0 rout of Liverpool.
Manchester United (+250)
- From 2010-11 through 2013-14, United and City took turns winning the four
league titles-alternating for two apiece. Neither has lifted the trophy
since. The Red Devils drew against Stoke on Sept. 9 but bounced back to
thrash Everton 4-0 this past Sunday.
Chelsea (+500)
-Chelsea is the defending champion and has won the EPL twice in the last
three years. The Blues' margin of victory on each occasion was at least
seven points, so they are capable of being dominant at times. Chelsea is a
decent 3-1-1 this season, with its only loss coming to Burnley.
Tottenham (+1400)
-There's Man City, Man United, and Chelsea, and then there's everyone else.
Tottenham may be the best of the rest, although it is currently in a logjam
for fifth place with eight points-one behind Newcastle. This club has not
captured the English championship since 1960-61.
Tour Championship
Jordan Spieth (+500)
- The finale of the FedEx Cup Playoffs takes place this week in Atlanta.
Spieth leads the standings with three top-10 playoff performances,
including two runner-up finishes and a T7 at last week's BMW Championship.
The 24-year-old American won this tournament in 2015 before placing T17 in
2016.
Rickie Fowler (+750)
- Fowler has been getting progressively better with each passing playoff
event. The 28-year-old American was T20 at The Northern Trust, T13 at the
Dell Technologies Championship, and runner-up at the BMW Championship.
Fowler missed the Tour Championship in 2016, so he should be especially
inspired upon his return.
Dustin Johnson (+800)
- Johnson won The Northern Trust but saw Spieth and Justin Thomas pass him
in the FedEx Cup standings after placing T18 in the second playoff
tournament and T33 last week in Illinois. Johnson will be eager to make
amends following last year's Tour Championship and FedEx Cup collapse on
the final Sunday.
Jon Rahm (+1000)
- Rahm took the PGA Tour by storm this season. The 22-year-old Spaniard
owns one win and 10 Top-10 finishes, a resume that has him fifth in the
FedEx Cup standings and controlling his own destiny at East Lake. Rahm has
been in the top five of all three playoff events. Thomas and Jason Day are
+1100 fifth choices.
