NFL teams got to look at their schedules starting last week. Now they must
get back to looking at their draft boards, as the NFL
Draft is set to begin on Thursday night. Meanwhile, the first round of the
Stanley Cup playoffs has concluded and now the two title
favorites-Washington and Pittsburgh-have to go head-to-head in the Eastern
Conference semifinals.

NFL Draft
Leonard Fournette "under" position 4.5 (-125)
- Fournette will be the first running back off the board on Thursday,
possibly as early as No. 2 overall to San Francisco. If the 49ers pass, the
former LSU standout could go fourth to Jacksonville. Fourette averaged 6.5
yards per rush in each of his last two college seasons.
Patrick Mahomes under position 24.5 (-175)
- Mitch Trubisky is going to be the first quarterback selected, but Mahomes
could be second (Clemson's DeShaun Watson is also in the mix). Arizona
needs an heir apparent to Carson Palmer and may snag the former Texas Tech
star at No. 13. But will he fall considerably if the Cardinals pass?
DeShone Kizer under position 30.5 (+160)
- How many quarterbacks will go in the first round? Trubisky is a lock,
while Mahomes and Watson are also likely to be snatched up on Thursday.
Kizer could make it four, possibly to Pittsburgh at No. 30. If nothing
else, the former Notre Dame signal-caller is not short on confidence.
T.J. Watt under position 32.5 (Even)
- Watt is a big name simply because he is the brother of J.J., but he also
appears to be the real deal. The former Wisconsin linebacker had 11.5 sacks
as a senior in 2016. Green Bay at No. 29 and New Orleans with the Patriots'
pick at No. 32 could be interested.
No. 2 overall pick
Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford (+200)
- Assuming Myles Garrett goes in the top spot to the Browns, Thomas is the
favorite to be snagged by San Francisco. The former Stanford pass-rusher
recorded eight sacks and a forced fumble last season.
Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina (+300)
- The 49ers appear to have a big decision on their hands between offense
(Trubisky) and defense (Thomas). UNC's star QB stands at 6-foot-3 and 220
pounds, and he threw 30 TDs to just six INTs in 2016.
Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State (+750)
- Due to a redshirt and then an injury, Lattimore basically played just one
season at Ohio State. NFL scouts did not have to see any more. Lattimore
made four interceptions in 2016, one of which he returned for a touchdown.
Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M (+1000)
-Garrett is just about a lock to go No. 1 overall to the moribund Cleveland
franchise. If he somehow does not, there is no reason the 49ers should pass
on him in the second position (well, as long as they don't ask Warren
Sapp).
Stanley Cup
Washington Capitals (+275)
-Whomever's idea it was for this format of the NHL Playoff brackets did one
of the most insanely idiotic things, did not come close to a rational
thought, has made everyone else dumber, is awarded no points, and may God
have mercy on his or her soul. Seriously, why are the Caps playing the
Penguins?
Pittsburgh Penguins (+450)
- These are the two best teams in the NHL for crying out loud. Washington
won the Presidents' Cup with 118 points and Pittsburgh was second with 111.
The Capitals held off Toronto in six games, five of which went to overtime,
while the Penguins are coming off a routine five-game series against
Columbus.
Anaheim Ducks (+600)
- Anaheim captured the Pacific Division title with the third-best
regular-season record in the Western Conference. The Ducks have a recent
history of choking in Game 7 situations, but they did not come close to
going the distance with Calgary. Instead, they swept the Flames in four
straight contests.
Nashville Predators (+700)
- No first-round result was more surprising than Nashville's sweep of
Chicago, which had won three of the last seven Stanley Cups and was seeded
first in the Western Conference. The Predators now face St. Louis and again
do not have home-ice advantage. Edmonton is also a +700 fourth choice.
Zurich Classic of New Orleans
Jason Day/Rickie Fowler(+650)
- The annual Zurich Classic has become a two-man team event for the first
time in 2017. Each team will play alternate shot for two days and best ball
for the other two days. Fowler, who placed T20 at this tournament last
year, contended at the Masters earlier in April before collapsing on
Sunday.
Justin Rose/Henrik Stenson (+650)
- Rose finished runner-up at Augusta National, losing to Sergio Garcia in a
playoff. He also won the Zurich Classic in 2015, so he has to feel good
about his chances of playing well this week. This team has a combined world
golf ranking of 14 (Stenson No. 6 and Rose No. 8).
Jordan Spieth/Ryan Palmer (+850)
- Spieth, of course, is by far the bigger name in this twosome. Like
Fowler, with whom he played in the final round of the Masters, Spieth shot
himself out of that tournament early and often on Sunday. Palmer recently
placed T11 at Harbour Town was T6 last week in San Antonio.
Daniel Berger/Thomas Pieters (+1400)
- Hailed as one of the next big stars in golf, Pieters powered his way to a
T4 finish in August thanks in part to a Sunday 68. As for Berger, he placed
T6 at the Zurich Classic in 2015 and was a respectable T20 last spring. The
Branden Grace/Louis Oosthuizen team is a +1600 fifth choice.
