The year's third tennis major has come and gone, and now it's time for the
same to take place on the golf course. But whereas Roger Federer got the
job done as a clear-cut favorite at Wimbledon, it's anyone's guess as to
what will transpire at this week's British Open. On the baseball diamond,
meanwhile, the proverbial second half of the season is underway.

British Open
Dustin Johnson (+1200)
- Johnson has only one top-10 finish since being forced out of the Masters
by a freak back injury, and he missed the cut at last month's U.S. Open.
Although links courses are not exactly ideal for Johnson's
big-but-sometimes-erratic driving, he has made seven straight cuts with
three top-10 performances at the British.
Jordan Spieth (+1400)
- The Open Championship has been Spieth's worst major, but he missed what
turned out to be a three-man playoff by just one stroke in 2015. He placed
T30 last summer. The 23-year-old American has underwhelmed by his standards
this season, but he won the recent Travelers Championship in epic fashion.
Rickie Fowler (+1400)
-With Sergio Garcia now a major champion, making the argument that Fowler
is the best player with no such titles is even easier. The 10th
-ranked American has seven top-10s and one win in 2017 and he is coming off
a T9 finish at the Scottish Open. Fowler has made six cuts in seven British
appearances.
Jon Rahm (+1400)
-Rahm has taken the professional circuit by storm since leaving Arizona
State University, to the extent that he is already up to No. 7 in the world
at 22 years old. He won at Torrey Pines earlier this season and lifted the
trophy at the Irish Open earlier this month. Rahm made the cut (T59) at the
British last summer.
World Series
Los Angeles Dodgers (+325)
- At 65-29, the Dodgers are the best team in baseball by two games over the
Astros and a million games over everyone else. They have won 10 in a row
and own a ridiculous 30-4 record in their last 34 outings. Six players have
hit double-digit home runs, including Cody Bellinger with 26.
Houston Astros (+425)
- At the moment there's the Dodgers, the Astros, and then the rest. Houston
went into obvious rebuilding mode several years back, and it is all paying
off handsomely right now. Nine players have hit double-digit home runs,
including George Springer's 27 and Carlos Correa's 20.
Boston Red Sox (+650)
- The Dodgers' division race is just about over (10.5-game lead over
Arizona) and Houston's division race is totally over (16.5-game lead over
Seattle). As usual, though, the American League East is a bastion of
competitiveness. The Red Sox (53-42) currently cling to a two-game
advantage.
Washington Nationals (+700)
-In terms of talent, the Nationals can keep pace with anyone. Bryce Harper
(.337 average, 24 homers) is once again playing at an MVP level and both
Ryan Zimmermann and Anthony Rendon have gone deep 20 times. Washington
boasts a 57-36 record. Cleveland is also a +700 fourth choice.
MLB home run leader
Aaron Judge (+165)
- Judge has completely taken the baseball world by storm in his rookie
season with the Yankees. It reached a zenith at last week's Home Run Derby,
which he won in "wow" fashion. The 25-year-old currently leads the majors
with 30 dingers to go along with a nice .313 average.
Giancarlo Stanton (+250)
- An inability to stay healthy has been Stanton's kryptonite in his efforts
to win awards such as MVP and home run leader and to keep the Marlins
respectable. But he has been good to go throughout 2017 and is hot on
Judge's trail with 29 home runs.
Khris Davis (+800)
-Nobody has struck out more than Davis (125), although Judge is not far
behind with 117 whiffs. But plenty of good comes with the bad, as Oakland's
slugger had dialed long distance 27 times. Davis has homered in three of
his last four games despite hitting .213 in July.
George Springer (+800)
-Springer is tied with Davis in the departments of home runs (27) and RBIs
(65). That homer total is good for third right now, behind only Judge and
Stanton. Springer, however, has not left the yard since doing so twice on
July 7. Bellinger is a +900 fifth choice.
NBA team wins
Houston Rockets (Over/Under 56.5)
- The Rockets have won between 54 and 56 games in three of the last four
seasons (the aberration was a 41-41 campaign in 2015-16). James Harden (of
recent $228 million contract fame) turned in an MVP-worthy year and he now
has Chris Paul as a sidekick in the back court.
Boston Celtics (Over/Under 54.5)
- This offseason has been an eventful one, and not just out west. Boston is
unquestionably the second best Eastern Conference
franchise behind Cleveland right now, and the rich got richer in the form
of free-agent signing Gordon Hayward and No. 3 overall pick Jayson Tatum.
Oklahoma City Thunder (Over/Under 48.5)
- A one-man show is not enough to keep up in the Western Conference-not
even when that one-man show is Russell Westbrook. Now he has some help, and
he has it in the form of former Pacer Paul George. Thus OKC has a chance to
improve on a 47-35 record.
Los Angeles Lakers (Over/Under 32.5)
- Lonzo Ball: MVP. Of course, becoming a future MVP of the NBA-as the L.A.
hopes for the No. 2 overall pick-will be a much different beast than being
crowned the Summer League's best. The Lakers (26 wins last season) also won
the Summer League team title,
