2017 Season Win Total Pick: 'Over'

Philadelphia overperformed in the first year of their post-Chip Kelly rebuilding season. Carson Wentz exceeded expectations, and new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz - one of the most underrated DCs in the NFL - was able to stabilize a defense that had finished No. 28 or worse in three straight seasons. The Eagles beat three playoff teams - Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Dallas - and six of their losses came by a touchdown or less.

In my opinion this is a team on the rise. I knew they weren't for real when they got off to a 3-0 start last season. But watching this team work in the offseason I think they have the potential to be a sleeper, or at least a spoiler, team in the NFC.

Wentz still has plenty of work to do. Right now he is like a generic Joe Flacco. But that could be good enough to push this offense into the Top 15 in points and yards. Philadelphia finally upgraded its feeble receiving corps, bringing in game-changer (when healthy) Alshon Jeffery and veteran Torrey Smith. Mix in tight end Zach Ertz and the overrated wideout holdovers (Nelson Agholor and Jordan Matthews), and these guys are in business.

The defense buttressed the front four with Chris Long and Timmy Jernigan. And their linebacking corps is good enough. But the Eagles have a massive weakness at cornerback. The guys they have are mediocre at best, and there is zero depth behind that mediocrity. If anything submarines the Eagles season it will be this secondary.

Dallas and New York have been sucking up all the oxygen in the NFC East this offseason. But I think that Philadelphia has been overlooked. If either of those top two dogs slip, I think that the Eagles will be right there to pick up the slack.

The key for the Eagles will be surviving the opening month. Philadelphia plays three of its first four on the road. They also have a rugged three-week road stretch in December, which includes back-to-back West Coast games at Seattle and Los Angeles. This slate will probably keep them from being a true playoff contender. But I do think the Eagles can build on last year's momentum and sneak 'over'.
