Ole Miss Football Next Head Coach Betting Odds with Expert Predictions
Last week in SEC Country the football conference was in shock and awe with the news coming out of Oxford, Mississippi, that Hugh Freeze resigned. Ole Miss was already in the doghouse and had self-imposed a postseason ban for the 2017 college football season, but last week with Freeze's resignation this was probably the biggest loss for Ole Miss football program.
Now the million-dollar question for the SEC, college football and of course football bettors is 'who will replace Freeze as the head coach at Ole Miss'. Right now Ole Miss has given Matt Luke the Interim head-coaching job, and Luke was Freeze's former co-offensive coordinator. It's no secret that Luke is probably not high on the list of coaches Ole Miss wants to hire. However, if Ole Miss has an OK season then maybe the list of hires will be shorter.
Offshore sports book MyBookie has posted odds on the next football head coach at Ole Miss, and some of the names are shocking to even be mentioned. I'm not shocked that names like Les Miles, Chip Kelly, Lane Kiffin, and Charlie Strong are on this betting prop list, but I'm a bit confused on Chad Morris being the favorite. The list below is the complete betting list for candidates, plus I added my two cents and predictions on the guy that will cash that Ole Miss betting prop.
Ole Miss (Mississippi) Next Head Coach - Odds Provided MyBookie
Chad Morris (SMU HC) +250
Morris is the head coach right now at SMU, and I know he is only 7-17 at
SMU but his success at Clemson is why he is the favorite right now. I don't
see Morris taking this job, but his name should be in the rumor mill until
they name the new coach.
Derek Dooley (former Tennessee HC) +400
Dooley is the current assistant with the Dallas Cowboys and the Cowboys are
also in the news, but I don't see Dooley leaving the NFL for a school that
could have penalties. Dallas could be fighting for a Super Bowl ring while
the Ole Miss Rebels can't even go bowling. Dooley stays in the NFL!
Les Miles (former LSU HC) +650
No chance Les Miles will be the next head coach in Oxford. His name is only
mentioned because he coached in the SEC and his name will be water-cooler
talk. Les Miles' odds should be much higher then +650 because no chance he
even gets an interview.
Chip Kelly (former Philadelphia Eagles HC) 11-1
I think this would be a match made in heaven just because of Chip Kelly's
style, but I don't see it happening. A man can dream, but Kelly being the
new head coach at Ole Miss is just that, a dream!
Mike Norvell (Memphis HC) 8-1
Memphis head coach Mike Norvell is an interesting name, and last year he led the Tigers to an 8-5 record. Norvell is only 34 years old, and I see Ole Miss going young as their next head coach. He has ties out west for recruiting. I'm not saying he would be one of my favorites, but at 8-1 it could be a nice price.
Blake Anderson (Arkansas St. HC) +600
Ole Miss went to the Arkansas St. well once before with the hire of Freeze,
so why not test the waters again. Anderson opened up at +700 and quickly
was bet down to +600. If Arkansas St has another winning season with
Anderson (four straight), this rumor will be floating around all season
long. No matter what happens at Ole Miss, Anderson could be on a bunch of
lists after this season.
Brent Venables (defensive coordinator Clemson) 10-1
In my eyes Brent Venables, the defensive coordinator at Clemson, would be a
home run if they could steal him away. The checkbook would have to be very
deep to steal Venables away from Clemson, and I just don't see that
happening. If Venables leaves Clemson it will be for a school or NFL team
that doesn't have so many question marks.
Lane Kiffin (Florida Atlantic HC) 13-1
If you like reality television then you want Lane Kiffin to come back to
the SEC West and take this job. I'm hearing that Kiffin wants to go back
out west to coach, so leading a team in the SEC that has to deal with
Alabama is highly unlikely. But I thought reality television would be done
with 10 years ago, so what do I know?
Scott Frost (Central Florida HC) 11-1
Former Nebraska quarterback Scott Frost is young, and his name will be
mentioned for tons of opening head-coaching jobs. But as far as him landing
at Ole Miss, I say 'No'. Frost has an offensive mind when it comes to
coaching, and I would love to see him at Ole Miss, but I'm hearing this
will not even be close. Keep an eye out for Scott Frost because he will be
a head coach at a big power five school soon.
Bobby Petrino (Louisville HC) 20-1
Absolutely no chance Bobby Petrino coaches at Ole Miss, and his number
should be much higher.
Mike MacIntyre (Colorado HC) 13-1
Mike MacIntyre had a miracle season last year in Boulder, Colorado, and I
don't see him leaving Colorado for a school that will have penalties.
Landing MacIntyre would be swinging for the fences, but in this case I see
a big strike out. Another coach that I see should have longer odds!
Charlie Strong (former Texas) 13-1
Absolutely no chance Charlie Strong coaches at Ole Miss, and his number
should be much higher. Strong will have success at South Florida, and I see
him staying at USF for a couple years.
Bryan Harsin (Boise St. HC) 16-1
No way Boise St. lets Bryan Harsin leave for Ole Miss! The Boise St.
football program is deep, and if Harsin leaves it's for his No. 1 dream
coaching job. I don't see Ole Miss being his dream coaching job.
Neal Brown (Troy HC) 13-1
If you are looking for an interesting name with double-digit odds then Neal
Brown is your man. The University of Troy is in Alabama, so recruiting
won't be an issue, and Brown is an young coach on an upward trajectory. He
led the Trojans last year to a 10-3 victory with a bowl win over Ohio. Troy
will be in the hunt for the Sun Belt title, and again Troy will have a
winning season, and I can guarantee Brown will be mentioned for a big pay
raise at a bigger university. I highly recommend jumping on Brown at 13-1
because this is great betting value.
Willie Fritz (Tulane HC) 16-1
I'm not going to lie but I was shocked that Willie Fritz was being
mentioned for the Ole Miss coaching job. I'm hearing that the main reason
why Fritz is being considered is because he is a well-established head
coach. Fritz led Georgia Southern to an outstanding 9-3 record in 2014, and
I'm hearing what he is doing so far at Tulane should be interesting. Fritz
is on a full-on rebuild at Tulane, and I don't see him leaving New Orleans
this year. However, if he can change the Green Wave then Fritz will be
highly sought out.
Matt Luke (Ole Miss Interim HC) 10-1
I'm hearing that the interim tag will most likely stay on Luke all season
long, and if that is the case he will need a miracle season to be named the
new head coach at Ole Miss. With everything pointing bad for the Rebels and
Luke being named the interim HC, you figure that is the reason why he is
10-1 to get the job. I believe there are many good young coaches out there,
and I see this opening and rumor mill being live until the holiday season.
Field (all others) +500
My prediction is the field because I believe other names throughout the
college football season will be named. Here are others that I believe will
be mentioned and maybe just maybe someone on this list will be the new Ole
Miss college football head coach. Scott Satterfield (Appalachian St HC),
Skip Holtz (Louisiana Tech HC), Bo Pelini (Youngstown St HC), Greg Schiano
(Ohio St DC), Major Applewhite (Houston HC), and Joe Moorhead (Penn St OC).
