2017 Season Win Total Pick: 'Under'

The Giants have traditionally been one of the easiest teams in the NFL to handicap. When they are posted as an underdog or not expected to do anything they always show up and overperform. And when they are faced with expectations and heaped with hype they always manage to underachieve.

So I'm skeptical this season about the prevailing media narrative that the Giants are a team on the rise and a true contender in the NFC.

The Giants were certainly overachievers last season, winning 11 games and making the postseason for just the second time in eight years. The Giants rode the back of a dominating defense, their best in a decade, and were able to overcome a hapless offense while winning seven gam es by six points or less. Statistically, New York overachieved past their Pythagorean Win Total by over two full games.

My main issue with the Giants this year is on offense. A lot has been made of their signing of Brandon Marshall. But he's a past-his-prime head case with some of the worst hands in the business. Further, offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan is one of the worst OCs in the league. Last year the Giants offensive scheme and play calling was on par with that of a high school program. Their offensive line stinks. They don't have any running backs. And the cherry on top is that overrated turnover machine Eli Manning looked lost at times last season and at nearly 37 years old is well past his prime.

Defensively, the Giants should again field a rock-solid unit. However, I don't expect them to finish in the Top 10 in yards and scoring again. Last year their 18.1 defensive yards per point was well beyond the norm, and if the injury issues that hit them in 2014 and 2015 creep back on this side of the ball there isn't enough depth to sustain.

The Giants open with three of their first four games on the road and close with three of their final four at home against divisional opponents. They also have three West Coast road trips. Nothing will come easy.

New York had posted three straight losing seasons before busing out for last year's 11 wins. But, again, they overachieved. I think the NFC East is as deep and rugged as ever, and I don't know that any of the four teams will get to 10 wins. I have the Giants staying 'under' this season and failing to live up to the hype.
