Nathan's 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest

It’s that time of year again to fire up the grill, light some fireworks, and spend quality time with family and friends. But before you do that you must prepare to watch some gross and over-eating men and women!

Nathan’s Famous 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest will be held Tuesday July 4. It will be the 101th edition of the Nathan’s Famous 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, NY at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Street.

Last year Joey Chestnut wanted his “Mustard-Yellow Belt” back because in 2015 Matt Stonie upset Chestnut.  Joey “Jaws” Chestnut easily defeated Stonie last year 70-53. And yes, we are talking about number of hot dogs. No, that is not a typo, Chestnut ate 70 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Tuesday, Chestnut will be looking for 10 out of 11 Mustard Belts and the No. 1 ranked eater in the world by Major League Eating (MLE) will look to hold off Stonie again. Stonie is now the second-ranked eater in the MLE.

This matchup between Chestnut and Stonie won’t be close in my eyes and Tuesday morning I’m more interested to see if the Hot Dog record will be broken. The record is 73.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes by, of course, Joey Chestnut. Chestnut has been quoted saying he would love to eat 75 dogs in 10 minutes.

The Women’s Championship is also up for grabs on Tuesday. And for the ladies, I don’t see the champ going down. Three-time returning champion Miki Sudo should have no problem beating Sonya Thomas again.

Last year Sudo ate 38.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes and Sonya Thomas was close at 35. But this year I see Sudo pulling away further from Thomas. I still can’t forget witnessing Sudo eating 40 Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino, my old work place, during a qualifying competition in 2013! Overall, Sudo is a beast when it comes to competitive eating. And she holds eating records like 8.5 pounds of Kimchi in six minutes and 7.5 pounds of deep-fried asparagus in 10 minutes!
