Monday Night Football Predictions: Washington Redskins at Kansas City Chiefs Odds & Picks
When you think of the best Chiefs players of all-time, you probably don't think offense first. Sure, the franchise had a Hall of Fame quarterback in Len Dawson, arguably the best receiving tight end in league history in Tony Gonzalez, and some excellent running backs (at least for a few years) like Jamaal Charles, Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson and Christian Okoye.
Me? I think defense when I think Chiefs. For example, the franchise has had four Defensive Rookies of the Year, including current cornerback Marcus Peters (2015). Believe it or not, Kansas City has never had an Offensive Rookie of the Year. If the 2017 vote were taken now, however, running back Kareem Hunt would be the overwhelming winner. At Bovada , he's the -200 favorite, with Vikings running back Dalvin Cook a distant second at +500.
When the Chiefs opened the season on Thursday, Sept. 7, in an NBC national game in New England, most casual fans likely had never heard of Hunt, a third-round pick out of Toledo. He blew up that night and will be the main story line on the Week 4 Monday Night Football telecast as Kansas City, the AFC's lone 3-0 team, hosts the Washington Redskins (2-1).
Redskins at Chiefs Betting Story Lines
Washington could make history here as the Redskins are one of two active franchises (Arizona Cardinals) to never win at Arrowhead Stadium, although they have played there just four times overall and not since 2005. The Skins' 1-8 record against the Chiefs is their worst against any team by winning percentage.
It will be very interesting to see how Washington's defense plays here after it had arguably the best performance of any team thus far in 2017 last Sunday night in dominating the Oakland Raiders, who had been leading the NFL in scoring, 27-10 (which helped K.C). Derek Carr was overwhelmed by the Redskins' pass rush and sacked four times. The Raiders were 0-for-11 on third down, had 128 total yards and turned it over three times. Kirk Cousins, meanwhile, was fantastic in completing 25 of 30 for 365 yards and rating of 150.7 that is only a few points from perfect. The Skins played without No. 1 running back Rob Kelley and top tight end Jordan Reed, and it's not clear if they will go here.
The Chiefs won a potential trap game at the Chargers in Week 3, 24-10. It was Kansas City's 12th straight win against an AFC West opponent, its longest streak since 1994-96. Hunt was at it again, rushing 17 times for 172 yards and a 69-yard score. Hunt leads the NFL in rushing (401 yards), yards from scrimmage (538) and total touchdowns (six). The scrimmage yards are No. 2 all-time by a player in his first three career games behind former Lions great Billy Sims (562). Hunt's six TDs are tied with Sims and some guy from 1920 you never heard of for the most by a player in his first three games.
Finally, Hunt is the first player with at least a 50-yard TD in each of his first three outings. The Chiefs have scored at least a 50-yard touchdown in nine consecutive regular-season games, the longest streak in league history. The Chiefs! That Hunt has another 50-yarder this week is +400 at Bovada with "no" at -700. That he breaks the rookie season touchdown record of 22 is +300 with no at -500. That mark of 22 was set by Bears Hall of Famer Gale Sayers in 1965.
Hunt won't be the only rookie contributing on Monday as the Chiefs have a new kicker in Harrison Butker, signed off Carolina's practice squad this week after Cairo Santos was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury. Santos is one of the better kickers in the NFL; he finished sixth in the league last year with 129 points and was 3-for-3 on field goals and 12-for-12 on PATs this season. A seventh-round pick by Carolina, Butker lost out to Graham Gano in training camp, but he made both his field goal attempts and all four PATs in the preseason.
Redskins at Chiefs Betting Odds and Trends
At 5Dimes , Kansas City is a 7-point favorite (+100) with a total of 49. On the moneyline, the Chiefs are -275 and Redskins +235. On the alternate lines, K.C. is -7.5 (+120) and -6.5 (-120). Washington is 2-1 against the spread (1-0 on road) and 1-2 "over/under" (1-0 on road). Kansas City is 3-0 ATS (1-0 at home) and 2-1 O/U (1-0 at home).
The Redskins are 3-8-1 ATS in their past 12 after allowing 15 points or fewer in their previous game. They are 1-6 ATS in their past seven on Monday. The Chiefs are 6-2 ATS in their past eight vs. teams with a winning record. The under is 4-0 in Washington's past five after a win. It's 5-2 in K.C.'s previous seven on Monday.
Redskins at Chiefs Betting Prediction
"He's a guy that you have circled going into the game," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said of Hunt. Washington has excelled against the run, allowing just 62.3 yards per game (second to Denver). But the Chiefs also use Hunt as a receiver out of the backfield, and Alex Smith is quietly leading the NFL in completion percentage and rating. Pick your poison with this Chiefs offense, something I never thought I'd say. I expect Kansas City to win by a touchdown, so give the 6.5-point alternate line. Go under the total.
