2017 Season Win Total Picks: 'Under'

If HBO's "Hard Knocks" did anything last year it was pull back the curtain on the fact that the Rams were going to be awful in their first season in Los Angeles. They were exactly that, winning just four times and being outscored by nearly 11 points per game. That debacle led to the firing of coach Jeff Fisher, and now the Rams are attempting to sell a fresh start to their fractured fan base for the second season in a row.

That's what the Rams are selling. But I'm not buying. This team still stinks, led by their in-way-over-his-head quarterback Jared Goff. Goff showed me absolutely nothing in his five starts last year. And I don't have high expectations for him this fall, either. He is still learning to play the position in the NFL and adjusting to the speed at this level. I think Goff is a bust. But he still the best option the Rams have.

Los Angeles is trying to finally upgrade its skill positions. They are hoping for a bounce back year out of Todd Gurley. And their trade for oft-injured and overrated Sammy Watkins was done under the guise of giving Goff a No. 1 receiver. The reality is that the Rams still don't have many playmakers on offense. And certainly not enough to make any monumental gains after posting the No. 32 scoring offense and No. 32 total offense last season.

The Rams defense will be experiencing a sea of change. They are shifting from a base 4-3 to a 3-4 led by acclaimed defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. They are still without Aaron Donald, who is holding out. And even when Donald returns I don't know that either he or Michael Brockers will be nearly as effective in the new scheme. The Rams are thin at linebacker and in the secondary. And this unit won't be able to carry water for the feeble offense.

At 31-years-old, Sean McVay is the youngest coach in NFL history. He's only been an NFL assistant (tight ends and then as offensive coordinator) for seven years. So there is no way of knowing how competent he will be. There is no telling how the players will respond to someone so young and unproven. And there is no telling how Los Angeles will adjust to their new schemes on both sides of the ball.

The Rams don't have an overly difficult schedule. They open with two home games, and McVay gets to take on his former team in Week 2. But there is simply nothing impressive about this group. I think they are clearly the third- or even fourth-best team in the division, and I think they will pay for that. Take them 'under'.
