2017 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Under'

Aaron Rodgers put on one of the all-time great quarterback displays for about three months last season and carried Green Bay to the cusp of the Super Bowl. As long as Rodgers is still under center, the Packers have to be considered one of the favorites to win the NFC and a legit Super Bowl threat.

But will (or more importantly can) absolutely anyone on the Packers roster raise their level of play to match Rodgers? If not, it's been proven over the past two "underachieving" seasons that Rodgers can only carry this team so far.

Green Bay's biggest issue is its dearth of true top-tier talent. Rodgers is epic. Clay Matthews is an All-Pro linebacker. But that's it. Green Bay has other capable players on both offense and defense. But they don't have any game changers, they don't have enough proven veterans in the locker room, and they don't have any big game performers. Instead, the Packers will have one of the six youngest rosters in the NFL for the sixth straight year.

Unless Rodgers can maintain the superhuman level of play that he produced late last season for a full 20 weeks then I feel like the Packers are due to come up short of getting another NFC title. They don't have the defense or the running game needed to win a championship. And, as they've proven the past two seasons, their lack of depth and top-end talent can be exposed by just one or two offensive injuries.

The Packers have some indicators suggesting that they will actually be worse this year. Their offensive yards per point was in the realm of the absurd. Green Bay also benefitted from another season of a positive turnover margin. And their yardage and point differential suggest that they should've only won nine games. Add in the fact that at one point these guys were 4-6 and floundering, and I can see a step back.

But it is pretty clear: betting against the Packers, in either the short or the long-term, means betting against Rodgers. And there's not a ton of upside there. So I don't know that I would bet this line. The Packers have posted 11 or more wins only six times in 15 years, so they are clearly overvalued. But, you know, Rodgers. And Green Bay is still the best team in their division. So 11 wins doesn't seem that farfetched.

But I have the Packers at nine wins this season, due in part to a brutal schedule, and I think they will come up short of this number. Play 'under'.
