Free CFL Picks Week 7 from Expert Canadian Football Handicapper
A few CFL teams came into this season with a renewed commitment to focus on offense and scoring points behind their top playmakers. A perfect example was last week's thrilling last-second 41-40 victory by Winnipeg against Montreal to easily take my pick of the week "over" the closing 50.5-point line.
I am leaning that way again this week for my free pick for Doc's in one of the featured CFL inter-division matchups on the Week 7 slate.
CFL Week 7 Betting Overview
There is a double header of CFL betting action this Friday in a pair of inter-division tilts, starting with Winnipeg on the road against the Ottawa RedBlacks at 7 p.m. (ET). Ottawa has been listed as a slight one-point home favorite with the total set at 58.
The Blue Bombers are now 3-2 both straight up and against the spread following that dramatic victory against Montreal. They will face a RedBlacks team that went into last week's bye at 1-4-1 ATS but a profitable 5-1 ATS. The road team in this matchup has won the last three meetings both SU and ATS.
Later on Friday night, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will try and snap a five-game SU (1-4 ATS) losing streak as heavy 14-point underdogs against the 5-0 SU (2-3 ATS) Edmonton Eskimos. The betting line for the total in this 9:30 p.m. start at Commonwealth Stadium has been set at 55.5 points.
Hamilton's dismal start already includes a tough 31-28 loss to the Eskimos in Week 5 as a 3.5-point home underdog. The total in that game went over the closing 51.5-point line. Last week, the Tiger-Cats managed to score just one point on the road against Calgary in a 59-point loss as 12.5-point underdogs. Edmonton has won four of the last five meetings SU while going 2-1-2 ATS.
The lone game on Saturday's slate is West Division clash between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the British Columbia Lions in a 7 p.m. start at BC Place. The Lions are favored by 5.5 points at home with the total set at 56.5 points.
The Roughriders hammered Toronto last week 38-27 as 2.5-point home favorites, but in two previous road games this season against Montreal and Calgary they managed to score only a combined 26 points in two losses. BC's two losses this season against four SU wins came against Edmonton. In this head-to-head matchup, the Lions have gone 7-2 both SU and ATS in their last nine home games against the Roughriders.
CFL Free Pick of the Week: Calgary Stampeders at Toronto Argonauts
Week 7 of the CFL regular season gets underway on Thursday night with Calgary heading east to face Toronto as a 4.5-point road favorite. The total line for this 7:30 p.m. start at BMO Field currently stands at 54.5 points.
Calgary's lopsided victory against Hamilton last week has this team pointed in the right direction at 4-1-1 SU (3-3 ATS) after settling for a tie against Ottawa and losing to Montreal earlier in the season. Bo Levi Mitchell continues to lead a high-powered offensive attack that is averaging 35.5 points per game. He has thrown for 1,832 yards and 10 touchdowns against three interceptions while completing 63.9 percent of his 208 attempts. The Stampeders have also been able to effectively move the ball on the ground behind running back Jerome Messam with his league-high 414 rushing yards.
The Argonauts would have to be considered the best team in what has been a very disappointing start for the East Division. They are at the top of the list at 3-3 SU (2-4) but still looking for their first win (SU or ATS) against a team from the West. Veteran quarterback Ricky Ray has been lighting things up through the air with a CFL-high 2,282 yards passing and he has nine touchdown throws in six games. Toronto is averaging 25.3 PPG, but defensively it is allowing an average of 27.2 points to its opponents.
The total has gone over in six of Calgary's last eight games and it is has gone over in all four games this season against a team from the East. It has also gone over in two of Toronto's last three games in losses to Winnipeg and Saskatchewan.
Head-to-head in this inter-division tilt, the total has stayed under in three of the last four meetings. However, given what I have seen from both of these teams in their past few games, this sets up a great opportunity to cash in on the over 54.5 points this time around.
