Can you believe that some teams are playing their last game of the regular season this week? For most teams, there are still a few games left, but some conference tournaments tip off next week. The action is about to get even better. It's a great time of the year for college basketball fans.
It's the third straight season for the College Basketball Weekly Schedule Spot Fade Picks here at Doc's Sports. I'll be looking at schedule spots that could be bad ones for teams throughout the course of the season and then recommending plays based on those spots. We'll track the weekly results throughout the course of the season. For games that don't have a line at the time each article is written, the Bookmaker opening line will be used for grading purposes. All plays will be one-unit plays.
The plays went 2-3 last week. UNC Greensboro blew out a tired Wofford team in what was a really easy winner. Fordham was a double digit underdog and they won outright at Rhode Island in another really good selection. The three losers were Chattanooga, Denver, and Montana. Denver was the worst pick of the bunch as they lost outright as a seven point favorite. Chattanooga and Montana won, but failed to cover the spread. Montana was the toughest beat of the bunch. Montana was -6, and they were up by 12 with less than six minutes left, but they fell apart and won by only three points.
Play #1- Play on UConn (Fade Houston) on Wednesday, February 22
The UConn Huskies are a different team than they were a couple months ago. UConn isn't a team I'd want to be playing in the AAC Tournament. They are much better than their record would indicate. Houston is coming off a game where they led by double digits over SMU early before falling by ten points in the end. That was a big hit to Houston as they really needed a signature victory. Additionally, Houston has somewhat of a rivalry with the Mustangs.
UConn was down 36-12 at halftime of the first meeting between these two teams. Do you think the Huskies remember that game? Absolutely. I think UConn has a real shot at winning outright here, but we'll catch several points with the Huskies on the road.
Play #2- Play on UNC Wilmington (Fade Towson) on Thursday, February 23
Towson comes into this game having won six games in a row. Most of those were very close wins. The Tigers are without arguably their best player here as John Davis went down with an injury and is out for the season. Towson won both of their first two games without him, but this should be the game where they'll miss him badly. UNC Wilmington has a ton of scoring firepower, and Towson is no longer going to be able to control the boards without Davis on the floor.
UNC Wilmington won 76-67 at Towson earlier this year. Davis had 18 points and 14 rebounds for Towson in that game. Look for UNC Wilmington to win big here.
Play #3- Play on Charlotte (Fade Western Kentucky) on Thursday, February 23
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers were beaten 78-52 at home by MTSU last Thursday night. They bounced back with an impressive 76-64 upset over UAB on Sunday. Both of those are programs that Western Kentucky considers rivals. They put a lot of energy into those contests.
Charlotte hosts Western Kentucky here, and Charlotte is looking for revenge after a tough loss to the Hilltoppers earlier this year. Charlotte led much of that first matchup, but Western Kentucky made a late run and won 82-80. Charlotte is coming off a three game losing streak on the road. Now, they get to go home and get things back on track. I'll lay the short number with the home team here.
Play #4- Play on Milwaukee (Fade Detroit) on Friday, February 24
The Detroit Titans play five games in the span of ten days to finish out their season. I'm not sure why anyone would do this to their team, but here they are in a terrible spot. The Titans are likely to be worn out by the time they get to Milwaukee on Friday night. Milwaukee's schedule is much more manageable. The Panthers finish their season with only four games in their last 15 days. Look for them to cover the spread here.
Play #5- Play on Northern Arizona (Fade Portland State) on Saturday, February 25
The Portland State Vikings have lost seven of their last eight games. Portland State has played six overtime periods in their last seven games, including one triple overtime game against Eastern Washington. Portland State had two heartbreaking losses on the road at Montana State and at Montana this past weekend. The Vikings return home Thursday to play Southern Utah. Southern Utah is the worst team in the league, and Portland State is likely to get a win there.
Northern Arizona goes to Portland State on Saturday. The Vikings should be favored by double digits here, and I'll take the points. Northern Arizona has lost by only six to Weber State and five against North Dakota, both on the road. The Lumberjacks aren't a good team, but they've proven they can be competitive. Portland State has to be worn out after a really tough stretch, and I don't see them being motivated to win big here.
Play #6- Play on Green Bay (Fade Detroit) on Sunday, February 26
I already told you about Detroit's ridiculous schedule to finish the season, and this is their final game of the regular season. It will be their fifth game in ten days. The Titans will have played on Friday night, and then this game is early Sunday afternoon. It's definitely a quick turnaround, and the Titans are likely to be on fumes here. Green Bay lost by a point at the buzzer when they played at Detroit. Green Bay had a ten point lead with eight minutes left in that game. Look for the Phoenix to get their revenge in a big way here. Lay the points with the home team.
