2017 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Over'
For the last eight years the Chicago Bears experienced relative "stability" at the quarterback position by employing one of the worst in the game. But finally, mercifully, Jay Cutler ended his injury-prone stay in the Windy City, fleeing for retirement (and then Miami; but not in that order) and taking his nonexistent leadership skills and turnover-happy style with him. Yet now the Bears find themselves in unfamiliar - yet completely familiar - territory: smack-dab in the middle of a quarterback controversy.
Chicago made two of the worst moves of the offseason. First, they signed goofy Mike Glennon - who has thrown only 11 passes the past two seasons - to a head-scratching contract. Then Chicago outbid itself by giving away four draft picks to move up one spot and draft Mitch Trubisky. By making these conflicting moves, the Bears guaranteed that one of the deals - either the Glennon contract or the trade - would end in total failure.
Not only that, but the two antagonistic moves are now actively working against one another. By signing Glennon and anointing him the starter the Bears have boxed themselves in. They touted for months that this would be "Glennon's year" and that Trubisky would be able to sit and learn. That is keeping them from having an open competition and letting the best man win. It is creating an artificial barrier for Trubisky while simultaneously undercutting any credibility Glennon has in the locker room.
So the Bears have kind of screwed themselves this season. And this is a big one. Despite being one of the NFL's flagship franchises, the Bears have been shockingly irrelevant for most of the past quarter century. Head coach John Fox is just 9-23 in two seasons at the helm, and the Bears are trying to nail down their first winning season since 2012.
The Bears bottomed out in 2016, posting their worst record since 1969. The result is a 2017 roster that has been completely renovated, with 46 of the 90 new players invited to training camp this July. The Bears offense (whoever is under center) will look for improvement from Dowell Loggains' system. And defensively they will give Vic Fangio's 3-4 defense one more crack.
Chicago is a complete afterthought heading into this season. But I actually think that this team will be much better than advertised. Honestly, there's too many things pointing towards it. The Bears suffered through a dismal -20 turnover differential last year and were 1-6 in games decided by six points or less. Their offensive and defensive yards per point numbers were comical and both in a regression range, as was their Pythagorean Win Total number.
Finally, Fox had never had back-to-back losing seasons before coming to Chicago. What are the odds that he has three in a row? I think the Bears are a good "buy low" option and I think they will at least double their win total from last year. Play 'over'.
