Case of the Mondays: From Bad to Worse for the New York Giants
The New York Giants' season might as well have already been over, as they
were 0-4 heading into Sunday's date with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Unfortunately for Odell Beckham Jr., his team kept playing. Beckham got
hurt (again) and the Giants lost (again). As for the Pittsburgh Steelers,
on the other hand, they were alive and well going into Week 5. But a
surprising loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars has Ben Roethlisberger and
company reeling.

New York Giants
. Just when you thought it could not get any worse for the previously 0-4
Giants, Sunday happened. Not only did they fall to a team that had been on
a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season, but Beckham suffered
a fractured ankle that will require surgery and sideline him for the rest
of the year. New York led 22-17 before a disastrous final stretch in which
Beckham sustained the injury, Eli Manning got sacked and fumbled at his own
11-yard line, and Los Angeles quarterback Philip Rivers threw a touchdown
pass to Melvin Gordon with 2:58 remaining. With that the Giants succumbed
27-22.
They are +10.5 underdogs
at the Denver Broncos on Sunday night.
Ben Roethlisberger
. With his team trailing the whole way in a 30-9 setback against
Jacksonville, Roethlisberger attempted a ridiculous 55 passes. Despite that
number, he still threw for a relatively modest total of 312 yards without a
single touchdown. He was also picked off a hard-to-believe five times. The
35-year-old is the first Steeler since Mark Malone in 1987 to throw five
interceptions in a single game, and he threw two pick-sixes for the first
time in his career since 2006. "Maybe I don't have it anymore,"
Roethlisberger admitted. But then he added, "Doing this long enough, you
understand not to panic. I'm not going to hit any buttons where it's like,
'Oh man, what do I do to change all this and that, go see people.' Just
come out on Wednesday and be ready to practice." Pittsburgh is a +3
underdog at the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6.
Michigan
. The Wolverines missed quarterback Wilton Speight in a 14-10 home loss to
Michigan State this past Saturday night. Of course, weather-not necessarily
backup John O'Korn-was arguably the biggest problem for Michigan's offense.
During what was a torrential downpour most of the time, O'Korn completed
only 16 of 35 passes for 198 yards with no touchdowns and three
interceptions. UM also lost two fumbles for a woeful total of five
turnovers. O'Korn will have plenty of opportunities for redemption because
Speight has now been diagnosed with three broken vertebrae in his back and
will be out for the season.
The Wolverines are -5.5 road favorites
over Indiana on Saturday.
Kelly Bryant
. Clemson underwhelmed against Wake Forest last weekend and Bryant went
down with an ankle injury. The junior quarterback left his team's 28-14
home win over the Demon Deacons during the third quarter and did not
return. Bryant threw for 200 yards and one touchdown while also gaining 39
yards on the ground before he departed. Zerrick Cooper and Hunter Johnson
took turns assuming relief duties under center. The Tigers, who remained
undefeated (now 6-0 overall, 4-0 ACC), have a short week before visiting
Syracuse on Friday night. "We've been repping three quarterbacks all fall,"
head coach Dabo Swinney noted. "Whoever's ready to go Friday will go. We'll
see what happens." Clemson is a -21 favorite over the Orange.
Arizona Diamondbacks
. With the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees having remained alive on
Sunday, Arizona is the only team that has failed to win a game so far in
the divisional round of the Major League Baseball playoffs. The
Diamondbacks had to use Zack Greinke in the National League wild-card game
against the Colorado Rockies, and the starting pitching vs. the Los Angeles
Dodgers has been a disaster. L.A. chased Taijuan Walker after just one
inning of Game 1 en route to a 9-5 victory and Robbie Ray gave up four runs
in 4.1 innings during the D-Backs' 8-5 loss on Saturday. Arizona (Greinke)
is a +105 home underdog against the Dodgers (Darvish) in Game 3.
Winnipeg Jets
. Two games into the 2017-18 campaign, the Jets have allowed a ridiculous
13 goals. By comparison, during their 16-game winning streak last season,
the Columbus Blue Jackets gave up fewer goals (11) in the span of eight games. Winnipeg lost its opener 7-2 at home against the
Toronto Maple Leafs and the fell to the Calgary Flames 6-3 this past
Saturday. The Jets have already surrendered at least three goals in a
single period on three occasions (four, even, in the second against
Calgary). They are also an awful 1-for-11 on power plays, including an
0-for-8 effort in that department against Toronto. Winnipeg is +153
underdog at the Edmonton Oilers on Monday.
Dante Exum
. This is not exactly a Derrick Rose situation. Exum hasn't had as many
injuries as Rose, and he has simply never been as good as Rose in order to
make this significant news. Still, another injury to Exum is a considerable
setback for both the player and his team. The Utah Jazz's 22-year-old point
guard suffered a separated left shoulder during a preseason game against
the Phoenix Suns last Friday. Exum, who missed all of 2015-16 after tearing
an ACL while playoff offseason ball with Australia's national team, will be
out for the season. He averaged 6.2 points in 18.6 minutes per game in
2016-17. Utah's "over/under" win total for the 2017-18 campaign is 39.5.
