2017 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Over'

We've all fallen victim to a savage hangover before. And one of sports' worst hangovers bit the Panthers last year: the Super Bowl hangover.

Carolina saw its 2015 win total reduced by more than half, tumbling from 15 wins down to just six. The Panthers had their streak of three straight division titles snapped last year and were essentially a nonfactor just months after falling in the Super Bowl.

The Panthers will be an interesting subplot to this 2017 season. The core of this team is the one that won the NFC two seasons ago, with All-Pro talents like Cam Newton, Greg Olsen, Kawann Short, Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis leading the way. The Panthers also attempted to shore up some weak spots from last year, adding experienced starters to their offensive line and secondary.

The key to the season will likely involve the right shoulder of Newton. The former MVP had offseason surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff. Newton was not an elite passer prior to the injury. And he's yet to really "let it rip" this preseason either. In fact, the Panthers quarterback could potentially sit for the entire preseason, casting a lot of doubt over his health and effectiveness for the regular season.

There is no Plan B for the offense is Newton can't go. Derek Anderson and Joe Webb are not starting-caliber quarterbacks. And Jonathan Stewart doesn't have enough tread left on his tires to carry this attack on the ground.

Defensively, Ron Rivera is still running his bread-and-butter Cover-2 scheme. The defensive line can still dominate, keeping things clear for Kuechly and Davis to make plays. Carolina was second in the league in sacks last year (47) but was third-worst in passing defense. They need improved play from the back end, and they are hoping that veterans Mike Adams and Captain Munnerlyn still have enough gas left in the tank to be effective.

Carolina never seemed to recover from last season's opening-night loss at Denver. That knife-twisting defeat - in the final seconds and at the hands of the team that had beaten them to a pulp in the Super Bowl - prompted a 1-5 start from which Carolina never recovered. A fast start this season is a must, and three straight games out of the gate against non-playoff teams from 2016 should be just what they need.

I missed on the Panthers last season. But I still feel that this is a system team and that Rivera's system is solid and proven. Newton's health is a lot to gamble on, though, and with his status uncertain there is no way I would bet this number. If he plays 16 games, though, I see this team getting 'over' and putt itself back into playoff contention.
