2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Push'
Paul Chryst's second year at Wisconsin at least threatens to bring some stability to a place that's seen more coaching turnover than one would expect from a top-tier football team. Make no mistake: Wisconsin is one of the best programs in the country. They have gone 98-35 over the last 10 years and are an outstanding 50-18 so far this decade. And they've done that despite the fact that Chryst is the fourth head coach they've had in just over four years.
Then again, Wisconsin's system, scheme and identity are so crystal clear that seemingly just about anyone could manage it. The Badgers simply smash the ball down their opponents' throats until their bludgeon their way to a victory. Wisconsin is consistently one of the best rushing teams in the nation, and this year's group should continue that mantra.
The Badgers actually had their worst rushing attack in years last fall, averaging less than four yards per carry. Some of that was due to the loss of Melvin Gordon. But it mainly had to do with the fact that Wisconsin started three freshmen across the offensive line. They should reap some of the benefits of that this year as well as the healthy return of Corey Clement and Dave Ogunbowale.
Defensively, the Badgers have half of the starters back from a stop unit that allowed just 13.7 points per game. Some of that was the byproduct of the Badgers' style of play; more running means fewer plays and shorter games. But the rest of the credit goes to a relentless front four and athletic linebackers. They will take a step back this season and will miss Joe Schobert in a big way. But this group is no pushover.
I give the Badgers a lot of credit for their consistency through transition. But the dirty secret about Wisconsin's success the past two years is that they've benefitted in a major way from one of the nation's easiest schedules. The Badgers have pounded the bad teams and lost to the good ones, going 2-4 straight up against teams in the Top 25. In fact, Wisconsin is 3-7 SU in their last 10 regular-season games against Top-25 opponents.
The Badgers have a schedule slammed with Top 25 foes this season and have one of the most difficult schedules in college football. They open with LSU in nearby Green Bay. They have road games at Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa. They also have rough home games against Ohio State and Nebraska. That is six very losable games.
I have to think that Wisconsin can find a way to win one of those six games. And we've already established that this team doesn't suffer upsets. So even though this team isn't all that good, I have to think they will work their way to eight victories. Hold your nose and play 'over'.
