2016 Las Vegas Season Win Total: 7.5
2016 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Under'
It is difficult to like Washington because they are one of the most despicable, shady, soul-sucking, corporate-whoring organizations in all of sports. Daniel Snyder, the leader of this debacle, is impossible to root for. And time and time again during his stewardship it has been made clear that this front office cares way more about the prospect of winning and selling their fan base on the hope of future wins than it cares about following the necessary steps to being a top-tier organization and actually finding on-field success.
I know I'm probably going to want to punch myself in the face at the end of the season for falling for Washington's annual summer shell game this year. But I have to admit, I kind of like the makeup of this Redskins team. And even if they aren't able to defend their surprise 2015 NFC East title, I still think that this team has laid a solid foundation to move forward with.
The first thing that jumps out about Washington is that they are massive on both the offensive and defensive lines. The Redskins are thick and physical, and they can control the trenches on both sides of the ball. That gives them a major advantage over their main competition in the East, Dallas and New York, both of whom have significant questions along at least one of their lines.
The Redskins used the franchise tag on Kirk Cousins this offseason and refused to commit to him long-term despite his 29 touchdown passes and solid leadership last year. I like generally like Cousins who, aside from some bizarre clock management issues, isn't a quarterback that will go out and win you many games, but he isn't going to cripple his teams with ugly mistakes.
Injuries are a concern among the other skill position players. Washington made a mistake in letting Alfred Morris go to Dallas, and physical runner Matt Jones is already injured. There isn't much depth in the backfield. Washington's tight ends, especially Jordan Reed, are always hurt. And both Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson have checkered health histories. Keeping everyone healthy is a major factor. And if Washington succeeds then they should improve on last year's No. 17 total offense.
Cornerback Josh Norman fell into Washington's lap this offseason. The All-Pro will attempt to buck the longstanding trend of horrific free agent signings by Washington. He fills a massive need as Washington won nine games last year despite arguably the worst secondary in football. DeAngelo Hall has been moved to safety - which will either go really, really well or really, really poorly - and Washington seems to have shored up what has been a weakness the past few seasons.
Last year's success was a little misleading. The Redskins were the best team in the worst division in football last year. All nine of their wins came against losing teams, and they outscored their opponents by only 10 total points on the year. Dallas should be healthier, the Giants, at least on the surface, have improved, and the Eagles could experience addition by subtraction. I think Washington will be hard-pressed to match last year's mark, although I do like the direction they are pointed.
