2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Mostly, watching Wake Forest football just makes me sad. The ACC already feels like the off-brand SEC; like buying generic cereal instead of the real thing. And this feeble little Wake program just tries so gosh darn hard to be relevant within this second-tier conference. But Wake Forest is not a football school - at all - and they simply can't compete with the bigger universities in this conference.
The Demon Deacons slogged their way to another three-win season under Dave Clawson last year. One of their wins was against Elon and another was a 3-0 victory over Boston College in what had to be one of the worst college football games ever played. (Wake Forest won despite just five first downs and 140 yards of offense.) Wake Forest has now had seven losing seasons in a row, and their primary function seems to be serving as The Guys In The Background on every ACC prospect's highlight reel.
But things could be looking up this fall. It's Year 3 of the Clawson regime. And even though they've made no significant strides statistically or in recruiting, there is always the chance that this is the year they fluke their way to a couple extra wins to get in the bowl hunt.
Wake has 16 returning starters, including eight three-year starters. That basically means that they just have all the guys that went 3-9 each of the past two seasons. The defense isn't that bad. But the Deacons offense has averaged fewer than 18.5 points per game each of the last four years and heads into this year with six sophomores slated to start.
Wake Forest does have a chance to string some wins together early this season. Tulane is completely overhauling its system, and Delaware is an FCS team. The Deacons also have home games against Syracuse (new coach), Virginia (new coach) and Army (terrible). Add in winnable games at Duke, at Indiana and against Boston College to close the season and it is conceivable that the Demon Deacons could beat this inflated season win total.
But it's not going to happen. The juice on the 'under' is -245 for a reason (although I don't know why the books wouldn't just make Wake's number 5.5 and be done with it). This team isn't talented enough to get to seven wins, and they won't win all the games that they are "supposed" to. I think Clawson comes up just short of bowl eligibility, and I have Wake at 5-7. Play 'under'.
